Poll question: Swine Flu Poll
Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 04:49 PM by Mike 03
It's pretty self-explanatory, but the definition here of "Prepared for a disaster" is: Able to exist comfortably at home (food, water and medicine), without leaving your dwelling, for a period of between three weeks and three months. (So, it is quite flexible).

The swine flu scare is of mild concern, and I will not waste every waking hour obsessing over it. Because unlike Bush, Obama knows what the hell he's doing, and I am prepared for this crisis.

McCain would have bombed Mexico and outlawed condoms to prevent swine flu by now.

22. Obama may know what he's doing, but...
Bush left the government in shambles. I hope beyond all hope that he didn't decimate the CDC the way he did most other agencies.

21. Also left out...
I am having flashbacks of the SNL skit back during the 1970s outbreak, where Chevy Chase gets swine flu and starts turning into a pig.

Crap, should have let my nursing license expire.

We could do fine here for at least a month, unless I was called to work.

10. In the event of a pandemic, I was thinking of heading off into the mountains and waiting it out.
So I guess I am prepared.

13. My hunch is that real people are ill from this flu. All flus are bird flus,
even if the manifest host is a pig.

On the separate question of scare tactics by the media or other entities, it seems as if this is a very manipulatable story. We can hope but not guarantee that it falls to responsible journalists. I'd like to see the CDC take a more direct role in communicating the severity of the threat.

Influenza when it wishes can role over a population and leave many deaths. I'm not any more prepared for this flu than for a run-of-the-mill winter's flu and am in the hope-for-the-best phase.

16. keep laughing at disease scares, y'all!
yeah, keep it up! ;)

I guess it seems ridiculous the hundredth time they report this kind of stuff. But I've read book after book about plagues and outbreaks.. we might think we're prepared for anything, especially us comfy 1st-worlders, but a good disease could wipe masses of us out. Some folks say the Earth will protect itself from how we're trashing it.. well a nice nasty sickness might be the simplest way to do that :) BRING IT's what I say :headbang:

17. Other:
I don't know anything about Swine Flu. I have enough water to exist indefinitely, as long as I pay the electric bill to keep the well pumping. I have about 2 weeks of food.

If I stayed home for 3 months I'd be unemployed, and I'd lose my house.
