Possible College Ban for Illegal Immigrants (Missouri)
Possible College Ban for Illegal Immigrants

JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri House of Representitives passed a bill today that will ban illegal immigrants from attending public colleges and universities in Missouri.

Some Missouri lawmakers are trying to join South Carolina as the only state banning illegal immigrants from all public colleges.

"Our goal is to deal with these immigration challenges, but not to deal with them in a way that prevents this university, a world renown university from recruiting the best and the brightest students from throughout the world," said Democratic Representative Mary Still.

If the proposal makes it into law, Missouri would be headed into an entirely different direction from most of the colleges in the country.

The College Board represents 3,800 colleges and universities across the country. The board wants congress to give illegal immigrants in-state college tuition, financial aid and a path to citizenship.

2. This situation always presents a paradox
On the one hand, lots of people don't like the idea of spending money on illegal immigrants. On the other hand, they get a lot of flak for not being able/willing to assimilate into American society and are unjustly characterized as lazy. Having them or their kids attend college helps with the last two "problems", but requires expending some resources to make it happen. It's kind of a catch-22 for those who don't want to see it happen.

11. I would imagine that depends on income
But the OP was about banning immigrants from attending any state college.

4. the thing is
I see admissions offices in public schools already doing a lot to track down in-state residency requirements for in-state tuition. And international students have to have the right visas and everything. So are there really very many illegal aliens attending public U? I really doubt it myself. But I guess these state legislators get a chance to act like they are doing something to appeal to the sorts of people these things appeal to.

5. For all practical purposes they are already banned
They can't afford the tuition and are banned from accepting scholarships or getting student loans.

We had an absolutely brilliant girl in my school who graduated at the top of her class and had already earned her LPN license. But she couldn't go to college because she had come here when she was 10 months old. So now she is working at Wendy's. What a waste.

I wonder if the residents of those two states realize how PATHETIC that these sorts of things make them look?

9. I am so proud of my state
In Kansas, undocumented kids can attend college at instate tuition rates if they have graduated from a KS high school, their parents have paid state and federal taxes and the kids have applied for citizenship. The racist immigrant haters have tried a couple times to overturn the law but failed to do so. And only 200 kids are enrolled in the program so it's not costing the state a lot of money.

I was at a legislative forum that was invaded by minutemen a few months ago and when they asked the state reps about overturning this law, one of them stood up and said she couldn't see herself voting for any legislation that denied any kid the right to an education, regardless of where they were born. We stood and applauded her and the minutemen shot daggers with their eyes at us. LOL

12. Good on Kansas! And especially the state rep!
The Oregon legislature is grappling with the same thing- over the objections of a rather small, yet highly vocal (and profoundly stupid) minority.

Fortunately, there don't seem to be too many "Minutemen" around- though if there were, it might be more amusing (and counterproductive to the fearful haters' cause).

15. I know but we have lots of meat packing plants here where the undocumented are hired
And then there is the agricultural industry as well.

Iowa has even more undocumented than we do in Kansas. And they have minutemen there too.
