One of the greatest, Pete Seeger, turns 90 in 8 days.

1. Happy Birthday, Mr. Seeger!
He still stands on a street corner and protests regularly.

An American treasure, blacklisted long ago. A patriot.

2. Did you see him at the Lincoln Memorial,

the show two days before Obama's inauguration?

It was one of those rare days in Washington, cold AND damp, the kind of cold that goes right through you, right through your bones. Everything hurts in that weather.

All the artists wore warm coats. Scarves. Some wore gloves.

And there was Pete, at 89, without a coat:

3. I found the weather that day invigorating -- nothing "hurt."
But I did notice that about Mr. Seeger, and imagine he was dressed in all sorts of layers (e.g., thermals under the jeans). And most importantly, he had his head covered. He's no dummy.

5. Oh, god, it was raw .............
It got to me, the dampness. That's always bothered me. But, it WAS cold, and, of course he was thermalled up. I just found the vision absolutely inspiring.

And, behind me, a young - oh, so young! - woman said, "I didn't realize Bob Seger was so old."

Ah, well............................

10. Ha ha... was she disappointed when he didn't break into "Like a Rock"?
I kept saying early on "They need Pete Seeger up there!" and sure enough, he appeared (along with that honey of a grandson!). It truly was a great day.

4. Saw that on television.

Haven't been to DC since I lived there in 1971-1972. I'm 61, and cold weather really bothers me now. Don't know how someone that old can handle it better than the young people on stage with him.

11. Member 'Ramblin Boy'?

The recording of that from the 1963 Carnegie Hall concert is to this day one of the best live recordings in history. This one is with Tom Paxton....

That bastard who cut Dylan's cable with an axe!? Just kidding, it's an apocryphal story. Love ya Pete.
