Hunter stabs blind pet pig to death
Edited on Sun Apr-26-09 11:36 AM by dkf
Dogs were sicced on animal in yard, witnesses report

By Michael Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer

They named him Keller, after Helen Keller, because he, too, was blind.

Though it was never clear who adopted whom, the black-and-white pig who wandered in from the forest found safety and comfort at the Kamilonui Place animal shelter run by Gina Lay and Gary Weller.

Lay said Keller knew every corner of the sprawling property, even if he occasionally did walk into a wall or a tree. He even had a friend, a part-sharpei dog named Manini, with whom he'd share long naps.

"He'd only known human kindness," Lay said, "so he wasn't prepared for what happened to him."

According to witnesses, Keller was lazing on the grassy front lawn of the sanctuary yesterday when a group of hunters pulled up and set their dogs on him.

The dogs mauled the 35-pound pig until one of the hunters finally stabbed him to death.

2. Well, they caught the guy. Maybe they should put dayglo COLLARS on those pigs?
Apparently this pig hunting goes on all the time, and it's not the first time this has happened.

Neighbors called police, who arrested the man who stabbed Keller. According to one witness, who asked not to be identified, an off-duty police officer from the area arrived first and drew his gun while detaining the hunters.

Lay said the man admitted killing Keller and later helped Lay bury the pig in a mulch heap on the property.

According to Lay, the men had been given permission by another neighbor to hunt pigs on a separate property far down the isolated road.

Packs of hunting dogs have killed several pets in recent years on O'ahu, and last year Joseph Calarruda of Makaha was sentenced to five years in prison for killing Porky, a pet pig owned by Mililani resident Aaron O'Brien. Porky was stabbed to death despite witnesses' pleas, and at sentencing, Circuit Judge Richard Pollack called Calarruda's action "vicious and callous."

7. There are small farms back here, but its pretty residential.
Its ridiculous that people are hunting with guns back there. I used to visit and play at the home of an elementary school friend who lives in that valley and the thought of people shooting guns is scary. I have a feeling its going to be a big deal at the next neighborhood board meeting and I hope all gunfire will be reported to the police.

5. I'm normally fairly neutral on hunting
I did it when I was a kid, my father did it, however that was with rifles, shotguns, and bows. Its not something I ever really enjoyed so I don't do it. I don't begrudge others that do.

However, hunting an animal with dogs crosses the line for me. When I shot something, it usually died, and if it didn't I used the knife to end suffering. I ate what I killed. Same with the other hunters in my family.

This is just sadistic. These are people who enjoy watching another creature suffer, and they should be punished, be assessed psychologically, and if need be removed from society.

24. I once had a neighbor who hunted with beagles
In order to train them, he would tie up a live rabbit by its hind legs and dangle it into his pack of beagles, letting the dogs rip it apart while the animal screamed and he laughed. Training my ass.

Now I know he may have been an aberration among those who hunt, but what got me was that his fellow hunters -- who obviously thought this was sick -- never said a thing to him. It was only us kids in the neighborhood who stood up to this sadistic sicko.

Yes, Virginia, there actually are people who get a thrill from torturing animals. That's not what hunting is supposed to be about.

27. Apparently you didn't duck or goose hunt then.
Those highly trained, and loving breeds I might add, are never used to kill themselves. Only to retrieve a bird that has been shot. As a former duck hunter, it is my opinion that you cannot lump everyone hunting with dogs together.

When I lived down South, I was surprised at the use of dogs for deer hunting, etc. That I don't agree with. But I just don't think retrievers, one of my favorite breeds, should be treated the same as the dogs these psychopaths used. A dog's behavior is 90% attributable to it's owner imo.

10. These aren't "hunters", they're roving animal killing squads
They sound like a bunch of yahoos out to have fun by watching animals being torn apart by their dogs.

Real hunters respect property lines and NEVER kill on people's property without permission.

These guys should have their dogs seized as dangers to the public.

Edited on Sun Apr-26-09 12:10 PM by dkf
The idea of what a real hunter respects or how he should behave is probably an alien concept to people here. Which makes it a lot more dangerous in my opinion.

21. Hunters often refer to their activity as a "sport"
But I can't see anything remotely "sporting" about taking down a blind, domesticated pig.

Throw them in a pit of rabid Javelinas. See how they do with those piggies.....

31. I'm sure such people would see waterboarding and lynchings as "sport" too
anyone who kills for "pleasure" is a sick and worthless m*therf*cker, IMHO. I believe that Native Americans had it right; if you take a life for food, do so with some misgivings, humility and reverence. These guys were nothing but a sociopathic band of worthless thugs.

33. On the mainland US there seems to be a thing about hunting wild
pigs with a knife instead of shooting them. It is pretty stupid, because wild pigs are pretty nasty creatures and can really hurt you seriously.

I think these guys were just jerks, not hunters.

35. Hawaii has wild pigs running around?
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 01:24 PM by DireStrike
This is so wrong. I can't imagine what kind of people would think "Hey, there's a pig. Sitting in a yard. THAT'S for hunting!!!"

OMG... it was an animal sanctuary?

......

"Yesterday was not the first time the sanctuary has lost a pet to hunters.

One Sunday afternoon a couple of years ago, a pack of hunting dogs chased another pet pig under Weller's house. Weller went outside to intervene, but not before a hunter ducked under the house, killed the pig with a knife and ran away."

......

This makes me want to move to hawaii and start "hunting". That is, hunting these sorry excuses for humans.

36. We do indeed
"Wild meat" is considered a delicacy in some circles hereabouts; I had some on Opihi's lanai years ago. It is even featured in one of our finest contemporary novels, Lois-Ann Yamanaka's 'Wild Meat and the Bully Burgers".

Hunting pua'a for meat on O'ahu is, however, an extremely stupid concept to begin with; most of the wild boars here have brucellosis (this isn't as much of a problem on the Neighbor Islands).
