If torture works, why didn't they waterboard Saddam Hussein to find out where the WMD's were?
....as asked by Thom Hartmann....

also, a caller to his show pointed out....if torture worked, then why did they destroy all the tapes of the torture process when they could have paraded that "evidence" as proof that it works....

1. I think we all know the answer
It "DIDN'T" work, and they knew it then, and they know it now. Sure they can convince the "zombie" base of the republican party it works, but anyone with half a brain knows better. The thing that really gets to me is those who "claim" to be Christians from the right wing, are supporting torture on a daily basis in order to protect the former administration. Ask them if Jesus would approve and they go bonkers and say all kinds of things that make no sense at all. Those who buy this line of crap are in need of some serous soul searching if you ask me!

5. The only time he could have been waterboarded or otherwise tortured
was immediately after he was captured. After that he was turned over to the Iraqis, and there were never any allegations, even by Saddam himself, that he was mistreated. If he had been it probably would have come out at the time. There was no reason to torture Saddam because they didn't need or want his "confession" about WMDs. Because they already knew he didn't have them.

8. Well, yes. But he was never waterboarded as far as we know,
probably because they weren't really looking for information from him.

3. Because they already knew there were no WMDs
and if they tortured Saddam until he gave them some false story about where they were (since, there being no WMDs any such story would have to be false; he couldn't tell them where nonexistent WMDS were) and they still couldn't find them, the truth that there weren't any would have come out. Either that or under torture Saddam would have told the truth, which is that he totally made up stories about having WMDs so he would appear more powerful vs. Iran. And they didn't want that truth out, either.
