Kit Bond (R-Mo.) says torture photos endanger troops
Bond says torture photos endanger troops

The top Republican on the Senate Intelligence panel on Sunday warned that the Pentagon’s plan to release hundreds of photos documenting the abuse of U.S. military detainees will endanger troops and the American public.

"I don't think there's any question it would endanger all of us, because I think it will enhance recruitment for all kinds of terrorists willing to come after us,” Sen. Kit Bond (R-Mo.) said on Fox News Sunday.

The release of those photos will come after incendiary photos showing U.S. military personnel abusing prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq spurred an intense debate during the Bush administration. The new photographs directly follows the release by the Obama administration of Bush administration memos outlining the legal rationale for harsh interrogation tactics.

Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, strongly disputed that the photos would endanger the United States and argued that practicing harsh interrogation techniques poses risks for the troops.

“What happened at Abu Ghraib is what endangers our troops. It's the practices that were authorized by high-level civilian people in the Bush administration which endangers our troops,” Levin said on the same TV program.

1. Who tortured them, who ordered the torture, and who took the photos?
THAT is who should be held accountable.

If Kitt Bond had kiddy-porn on his computer, wouldn't he be arrested... AND we'd go after the people who took the photos in the first place?

3. He's wrong.
The photos don't endanger the troops.

The very fact that we torture endangers our troops.

6. So, if somebody showed me pictures of foreigners torturing Americans
Edited on Sun Apr-26-09 05:27 PM by Tim01
would I want revenge? You bet your ass I would. Hell, I'd probably get a second job to help finance the payback operations. Especially if they were in my country.
This will get American people killed. Unless the mid east folks are nothing like other people.
Maybe the mid east people will feel sorry for us, for torturing their brothers and fathers. Forgive and forget? Basically an entire region of pacifists?
I don't think so.

13. That train left the station years ago: the people being kidnapped and mistreated
by the Bush regime knew they were being kidnapped and mistreated -- and their friends and families usually knew, too

Once you start torturing people, you have very few options to keep that secret: you can keep your victims locked up forever or kill them -- otherwise the story gets out. It's a certainty that US maltreatment of prisoners was well-known by ordinary folk in both Afghanistan and Iraq long before the US public had any idea about it. If knowing from first-hand testimony that a foreign occupying army has been torturing friends and neighbors doesn't recruit someone as a terrorist, the person is unlikely to be recruited

A serious and public effort to clean up this mess is critical to US credibility: if you have been following the subject, you will also understand that it is also critical for re-establishing reliable information-sharing with foreign intelligence agencies -- and we really need their cooperation in the effort to track and shut down international groups of wackos

The effort to prevent publication of information about US abuses is an effort to keep US citizens uninformed: the foreigners already knew about the abuses

8. Torturing endangers the troops. That's why Powell should have stood up and put his foot down.
He didn't.

And he got cheered at the inaugural.

10. Bond is afraid of the cold reality the torture pictures will display.
He can plainly see that they will turn people's stomachs and anyone that defended torture will face the wrath of the voters.

11. In other news, Kit Bond has been drinking again, heavily
The man is retiring in '10, so he's pretty much lost all restraint that he's ever had and feels free to talk about whatever shit crosses the two remaining brain cells that pass for his brain. Thankfully it looks as though Robin Carnahan (daughter of the late Mel, who beat out Ashcroft for the Senate seat even though he was dead)is going to get the spot. Now if we can only clean out the state legislature, then this state will start making some real progress.

Until then, ignore the red nosed, red faced man in the Senate, he's irrelevant.

12. Chickenhawk republican with no military service.
STFU Kitty. You know Jack Shit about our troops and the dangers they face.

Releasing the photos shows the world that we acknowledge our crimes and intend to prevent them in the future.
