4. I signed up for the Veratect bulletins, too.
Actually, this is a sensible use of Twitter. Normally, it's just sort of twitty.

I know some DUers are not thrilled with the source...but for the ones like me who are using it for real time updates, I'm posting what I see/read.

7. You're right... Twitter is not a source... It's a platform..
Veratect is the source of information... They are publishing realtime updates using Twitter.

21. Not that the kneejerkers will bother to think about that
They just see the T word and deactivate their brains. And, of course, half of them are going to assume the source is itself evil just because it uses Twitter.

9. Twitter isn't a source; it's a medium. And while I'm not into
Twitter myself, the source seems sound, at least initially. I'll investigate.

Possible Case Of Swine Flu At Fair Oaks School
CDC: Flu Vaccine Probably Ineffective Against Swine Flu

FAIR OAKS, Calif. (CBS13/AP) ―
A Fair Oaks elementary school will be shut down for several days while health
officials investigate a suspected case of the deadly swine flu, which has sparked
a nationwide health emergency.

Officials for the Sacramento County Department of Health said that St. Mel's School,
which has students from kindergarten through the eighth grade, will be closed until
Thursday at the earliest while officials try to confirm whether the teenage student
contracted the disease.

A sample has been sent to the Center for Disease Control, but due to the heavy
caseload of the outbreak, the results may not come back for a couple days.

8. Another article from local channel 3, KCRA:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A Fair Oaks school is closed while public health officials determine whether a there is a link between a sick student and the swine flu, officials said Sunday.

St. Mel's Catholic School will be closed until at least Thursday while Sacramento County Public Health officials look to see if a seventh grader at the school has a flu linked to the widening swine flu outbreak.

Parents of students at the school were told in an e-mail Sunday that the school will be closed for at least three days, while the health department calls families to inquire if any student is showing flu-like symptoms, according to an e-mail sent by principal Janet Nagel.

"The Sacramento County Health Department has notified us that one of our students may have this virus. The Health Department is currently testing to confirm the nature of this virus," the e-mail states. "We are recommended to use abundance of caution and they have requested that we close the school at least until Thursday to stop the spread. You may receive a telephone call from a Health Department employee today, asking if anyone in your household has an influenza-like illness … The Health Department has also recommended that the school remain closed until there is no incidence of new cases of respiratory illness for a week."

Sacramento County Health Director, Dr. Glennah Trochet, said at a news conference Sunday that there is no confirmed case of the swine flu in Sacramento County.

There are indications, however, of a mild case of flu reported at the school. A test conducted on the student does not match up to any flu case they have seen before locally, so they said they are sending the results to CDC in Atlanta for further investigation.

13. As I said before about the Canada flight twitter entry...
Given that the rest of there entries seem to have been right on target this weekend, I can't help but wonder if they got word of it before the decision was announced publically and the decision was rescinded so it never surfaced in the MSM.
Perhaps someone said to Canadian officials "ya know, that means we are possibly keeping Canadian citizens from being able to return back to their country" or something similiar. Or someone realized that there was no way to keep do it without shutting ALL flights inbound to Canada..because when you take "layovers" into consideration, people returning from Mexico may take a flight from Mexico with a layover into any other country before heading to Canada..probably that country would be the US. SO do they decide to ban flights from the US, also?? I think someone jumped the gun, made the decision, Veratect got the info, twittered it, and then Canada came to it's senses. Again, just IMHO.

I honestly don't know where they got their info for that entry, but there has been stuff noted on there that enters the MSM right as the entry is made or before the MSM has gotten wind of the news.

17. had one news producer gotten the story, they may have aired it on tv as well
but there is no way to verify so many things that people say anymore. At least if it's heard on, oh say, NBC evening news, it (hopefully) has gone through a few quality control steps and verified to be true.

22. Update from Ch 3: 7 kids out sick w flu this week. One had just returned from vac in Mexico.
Came back on Monday and then out sick the rest of the week, according to a school rep. By Friday total of 7 kids in the same class out with flu like symptoms.

School decided to close in an abundance of caution while testing determines what kind of bug it is.

23. Ok this is part of the plan
and it only means this is more serious

I expect San Diego to order schools closed soon

Wash hands, and get some extra canned goods

Home bound voluntary or even mandatory quarantines are not outliers any more
