Man Dies After Saving Two Boys From Near Drowning
Edited on Sun Apr-26-09 08:27 PM by cali
A 70-year-old man who dove into the Atlantic Ocean to save two children from drowning is being hailed a hero.

Charles Schulze who lives part of the year in the Renaissance II condominium on Pompano Beach was walking with a companion on the 1200 block of South Ocean Boulevard on Saturday afternoon when he saw two boys struggling in a rip current.

"They swam too far and got caught in the rip current. They started yelling for help," said Sandra King spokeswoman for Pompano Beach Fire rescue.

Schulze dove in to save the boys and brought them to shore. Shortly afterwards, Schulze became caught in the undertow. Another man jumped into save Schulze but it was too late. Schulze died later at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale.

The other Good Samaritan was taken to Imperial Point Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

2. bittersweet
and as a former ocean lifeguard, let me just repeat the old advice.

swim parallel to shore when caught in a riptide. you can't outswim it (usually). you need to swim parallel till you are outside it.

6. Trade your life for two others?
The stuff they give medals for. And rightfully so.

We should all love others so much.

17. Exactly
I really hope when my time comes it is presented in such a way. He gave life to others, he chose to act rather than watch.

Your comment clearly expresses my feelings on the matter.

8. Charles Schulze joins the immortals.
He is a hero. If I had a choice, I would go just the way he did. My condolences to his family; I'm sure he will be truly missed.

9. I'm a little confused...he had gotten the boys to shore.
He must have just gone out for a swim unrelated to the rescue when he got caught up?
Wish he'd stayed on shore and accepted all the thanks and praise due him and not gone back out then.
Amazing that the current got him although he was able to save the kids from it...rescuing can be very tricky even for a good swimmer.
What a hero that he could bring them in. God you just wish he was home with his phone ringing with people who'd seen the story on the news, that he could be around to see the boys when they are grown up and knowing he made that possible.

Peace to Mr Schulze and his family and loved ones

11. Mr. Schulze, before he left us all, gave those two young folks
Edited on Sun Apr-26-09 10:33 PM by saltpoint
an essential gift.

Their lives, for one thing, yes.

But also an example that people can and should be more generous, more watchful, more protective, and more given to emotional (and physical) rescue than they often are.

I hope the two young folks in this story attend Mr. Schulze's funeral as a way of saying 'thank you' and that they bank off his generosity toward them in their dealings with others.

Ride it , swim parallel to the beach , then come in to the shore .

Never I repeat never fight the rip tide.
