You can't cure stupid
So I am in line at the supermarket, refilling my canned good stores

I do that every six months or so... and this flu thing was a good reminder that it was time

Young man in front of me buying flu meds, you know the usual crap to treat symptoms they sell at the stores

Effective for symptoms and just that

So I decide to butt in

"Did you just come from Mexico?"

"Yeah so?"

"Here is why.... in five minutes or less I covered what the Swine Flu is, that he came from hot zone and that he SHOULD go to the local ER, health clinic (he has one at the university) and make sure it is not this

"It's not like flu will kill me!"

So I splained to him how exactly it kills... including the autoimmune response from hell, and once again told him that he was a prime candidate, given what the Mexican Health authorities have been saying (incidentally people refuse to go to the doctor not only in Mexico)

Well I got my flu shot last november, they make us do it, stupid people

It won't protect you against this. please go to health services, for your sake and others.

Nope you cannot cure hubris or stupid

Will send an email momentarily to the housing unit so they are on the alert though

Oh and got home and ahem washed hands.

But no, you cannot cure stupid

One thing is to meet the deniers on-line, quite another a prime candidate for this.

There are days I wished I didn't know any of this.

1. A lot of men will refuse to go to the doctor
unless there is shattered bone protruding from shredded flesh, and even then they tend to be annoyed at the prospect.

The guy is an idiot. His dorm needs to know they've got Typhoid Marvin among them.

But nuh-uh, nobody's gonna tell him what to do!

19. Hmm good point
now here is a piece of trivia for you

Guess why CA glue was developed for?

See during the Vietnam war they had this little problem with sepsis

It was meant to suture the skin in the field

:-)

Some of the crap one learns from looking at weird shit on the net which of course has to be true since it was on the web...

(though that one is true, a new version is used at ERs these days, as surgical glue)

I was doing research for weird shit for the game world I developed

Maybe, just maybe, a retort stand if we're talking about an injury on the right side. Left hand is a little shakier.

Why should we be told bad news that we can do nothing about? Like swine flu, AIDS, cancer? It's more courageous to struggle on to the end, still fighting, than to lay back and whine about how unfair life is.

ON EDIT: Not to mention that we can't afford out-of-pocket expenses that doctors charge, since we have no medical coverage any more.

9. what part of student health services are you missing
and secondly, you can do something... be kind to the rest of us and not spread it

That is why mandatory quarantines are usually used in epidemic outbreaks

Humans are way too selfish about this.

I mean I can't why should I go to HEALTH SERVICES, which young man has access to, get a simple test and stay out of the way of others where he could spread it. Let alone that TREATMENT within the first 48 hours can reduce the severity of the damn thing

20. What young man? You think we're all in freaking COLLEGE?
I've been working at my current job since 1977. We have NO HEALTH CARE, idiot! Neither do most working Americans.

And when we take a day off work, we are in danger of losing our job, and in today's market that means we'll be unemployed until our death, which will come awfully soon.

You have so little understanding of real life...oh, wait. You said Student Services. You must still be in college. Of course you know nothing about real life!

25. not so clear. she's at the supermarket, buying groceries, & the guy's buying cold medicine.
she's left out the part about how she knew he was a student who'd been to mexico.

my initial thought was, "do you always buttonhole people in the checkout line & give them 5 minute lectures?"

34. Why did he assume we are ALL in college then?
Adults don't have student health services. Adults don't have health services at all. I'm just trying to put some reality in the head of a kid who can't experience it in college, but will if/when he graduates. If he's rich enough to be a perpetual student, good for him.

are you purposely still equivocating about?

In case you wonder... yes 50 million Americans DON'T have insurance and that is a problem... a major one in a potential epidemic, let alone pandemic

40. He told ME to go to Student Health. I am NOT a student.
In other words, he thinks every human being on earth can go to a college and get free medical care.

This stupidity by this very young man, AND your stupidity in insisting he is right, is VERY annoying to me. Especially now. A friend of mine, up in the miserable city of Wasilla, Alaska, is dead broke and can't get a root canal because the local dentist college has closed up for the summer. Being Palin territory, they don't even have free clinics.

If your (and his) lamebrained theory was right, she could walk in and get her dental work taken care of, and end the constant pain in her mouth from an exposed nerve. You and he are wrong, and my friend is in agony, and you are truly pissing me off.

Besides, that college medical care ain't free - it's paid for by tuition - and if it's like what I got during my time in college, college health care makes witch doctors look brilliant by comparison.

41. I am willing to make a diagnosis of chip on shoulder
and yes, you paid for it with tuition, your point?

As to your friend I am sorry

Perhaps, not that in your chip on shoulder you make this connection, this may be the final push for people to DEMAND single payer national health care

Oh that will be paid with your and mine taxes, but I am sure you knew that

You should try to remove that chip, painful to go through life that way

Serious

:-)

12. Yes, you can. Or should I say, "stupid" can be cured.
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 12:22 AM by Skip Intro

All of us are capable of reason.

All of us can learn.

Not to say there aren't obstacles.

Not to say, at the same time, that you, or I, know all there is to know and should anoint ourselves the "educators."

But yes. "Stupid" implies ignorance.

And yes, it can be cured.

27. Ron White said it ... "You can't fix Stupid" ...
Ignorance is curable ... stupid is fatal ...

I see it as this ...

Ignorance can be cured with knowledge ... stupidity is being given the knowledge, and denying it ...
