It kind of surprises me that FL is so red.

Bear with me.

I live in upstate SC, red as a baboon's arse. It seems that at the local Unitarian Universalist church here, many members are transplants from Northern states.

I know this is just anecdotal, and not much anecdotal evidence at that. But it just seems like many transplants I've run into are progressive, but obviously most of them aren't, since FL is full of transplants and FL is not, overall, a progressive state.

1. Most of the progressive transplants I know are not Florida residents, just snowbirds
They usually claim residency in the other state, which is usually blue anyways! UGH! The conservative ones I know tend to be permanent residents. I wonder what the real statistics are though.

2. Florida voted for Obama.
I think it's basically a purple state.

3. Florida is just barely purple
when you consider the state legislature we are subjected to (just to the right of Attila the Hun). The voters tend to be conservative, even the registered Democrats. Obama won because Bush was thoroughly repudiated by the left and right in Florida, but don't expect this to be a trend.

4. FL just got a bit redder, while DE got more blue.
My in-laws moved down there last month and found a fundy church right off the bat to join - regular Sunday attendance is over 1600 (not counting snowbirds), while weekly giving runs around 50-100K. Why the weekly giving total is important to her, I'll never quite be sure. I'm at a liberal Presby church and we're glad to get 150K over the course of a year. The darned giving figure and Sunday attendance is always quoted in each telephone convo or email. UGH!!!
