- pro-choice
- pro-gay marriage
- universal health care

6. Balance the budget, even if it hurts
I was like that until Obama became president. I understand that you gotta spend to jump start the engines. But to be honest, I'm putting my "fiscally conservative" label on hiatus until the recession lets up.

23. ok. That makes sense.
Sometimes fiscally conservative means spend nothing on anything except roads, the police, and military.

it measures your belief system on two axes, fiscal and social, instead of the usual linear left-right thing.

5. you are...
complicated, and likely the brunt of jokes by your far left and far right friends; I know I am. >_>

Actually, I would have to say that you are slightly libertarian; how do you view government? That would be, imo, the defining factor as they generally support small government.

However, try this ( http://www.politicalcompass.org/test )link to take a test; I've found it to be by far the best around.

16. What that tells me is that you think "fiscally conservative" is something other than it is.
Fiscally conservative doesn't mean careful with money. It's a key term for anti-union, pro-market beliefs.

20. Well, often it's used to mean "being frugal," too.
That's what it means literally. It's one of those phrases that can mean one thing when it's said by one person, but can mean something else entirely when said by someone else.

It's like "family values." When a pro-reading educational organization says it, they mean fostering togetherness by encouraging parents to read to their children. When a Republican politician says it, he means banning gay marriage and abortion.

27. Eh
I disagree yet agree; things are not so black and white. You're right in that most tend to be that way; however...

For the sake of simplicity, a fiscal conservative advocates reduced government spending. I'm fiscally conservative; However, I am not anti-union, but am pro-market. That doesn't mean I want the market to be free range, and not fenced in - so to speak; only in the sense that there are regulations to protect people from being screwed. I really do not want to see corruption in the stock market. So, essentially regulations to the extent that the public is protected.

I also want to see regulations on corporations/the market and the environment, but I guess that would be in a different category.

17. Well, both are good issues, but they're not really compatible.
"Fiscally conservative" means you want to maintain a balanced budget, generally by cutting spending. That isn't really possible with universal health care, since that would be an enormous expenditure. It's possible, sure, but that would require enormous spending cuts elsewhere, and there's nowhere that's really great to cut spending (maybe the military, but there's a ton of political support out there for keeping that funded)

If you want to learn a bit about budgets, there's a great little game that came out at the beginning of the 2008 campaign called Budget Hero: http://minnesota.publicradio.org/projects/2008/05/budget_hero/

It presents the entire US Budget in a colorful, easy-to-understand way, and you can try canceling or adding various programs to see how it adds up. It makes a lot of the issues a lot more easy to understand.

15. Basic right libertarian.
If you are a "fiscal conservative", i.e. pro-free market, anti-union you're not a Democrat (at least of the traditional variety) although you'll find the Democrats more appealing at the moment because many of them are pro-free market and anti-labor as well.
