President Obama's White House issued an inadequate apology this afternoon after one of the two planes that serves as Air Force One did a low flyover lower Manhattan and Jersey City, prompting terrified citizens to flee from their office towers.

"Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision," White House Military Office director Louis Caldera said. "While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, its clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused."

Caldera distinguished career includes serving on the board of directors for IndyMac Bank from 2002 until its failure and subsequent seizure by the government in July 2008. In other words, he was there for the entire housing bubble while the bank destroyed itself.

Heckuva job, Lou. Heckuva job.

Now that he has confessed to being responsible for this horrendous mission, we expect that the president will very quickly ask for Caldera’s resignation. He has displayed judgment so poor that he simply cannot be permitted to continue in office. If he does keep his job, President Obama risks making a mockery of his promises of increased government accountability.

27. Yeah, but it was obviously stupid to do. Why did he approve it? That's what I want to know. nt

5. There was.
A plane resembling AF1, escorted by two F16's was spotted flying really low around NYC probably causing thousands of people to piss and crap in their pants. I'd say that was news.

7. My point being, on the linked page are three additional stories . . .
Covering the same topic. Smells like hysteria to me, and way over the top, IMO.

22. Youtube has video of people reacting to the sight and extremely loud sound of the plane.
I really do think it was psycops reminder to NY...

6. Actually that site reports almost exclusively on "BIDNESS!"
So, what's your gripe? An AF-2 Plane flies over Jersey/Manhattan and causes thousands to flee in terror and many to flee down 40 foot flight of stairs thinking it's "Cheney Prediction" that "Obama has made us Less Safe" and you think that this didn't happen...TODAY???

12. And aren't we lucky nobody died running down 30 flights of stairs.
Since YOU weren't inconvenienced, you have no idea why anyone is upset about what happened this morning. You don't understand the actual meaning of TERROR.

The people who ran this morning WERE THERE on 9/11. This IDIOT made them live it all over again.

But, of course, that's no biggie to you.

4. I agree it was a stupid thing to do, but his apology is anything but inadequate...
Compared to the "I'm sorry if anyone was offended" apologies that we've gotten used to from various Republicans, I thought "It was my decision, I take full responsibility, and I apologize" was pretty straight forward.

10. Do you mean: "Anything but adequate or Anything but Inadequate"
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 07:54 PM by KoKo
 Which? I would vote for "Anything but Adequate" to explane this HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE for those who went through "9/ll" and lost friends, relatives and their life as they knew it.

It must have been a terrible " DejaVu."

11. I didn't find Obama's apology inadequate at all.
It was refreshing. I do think the stunt was S T U P I D but if it had originated from the BushCabal apology of any kind would be the last thing we'd get. I don't know whether Caldera should be fired for it, BIG mistake that it was. I'm not ever sure what responsibilities a "White House Military Office director" has. Again, my question is, why were the local authorities informed but told that this was on a "need to know" basis? What was that all about? IOW, it wasn't the action itself, it was that people weren't expecting it. That was the faux pas.

I've been following this story since early today. I never heard that Obama PERSONALLY apologized.

26. Why does he need to "personally" apologize? He wasn't personally responsible.
So, in answer to your question, no, at least not that I know of. But the White House issued an apologetic statement and that is what I meant. I assume Obama did, personally, authorize that official apology.

14. Since we still don't know the point of the "photo op" in the first place, this is FUBAR
Who asked for it, why was it approved, what was the initial point? Some kind of commercial? Just weird, and more like a Bush "mission accomplished" stunt (or maybe that portrait of Bush staring out the window of AF1 on 9/11) than something you would expect from the Obama administration.
I am glad Obama is furious.

17. There's got to be more to this than we know. Did Obama get Sandbagged in this?
Too much with Swine Flu and the rest to not thing something is being covered over that they want to get him on. Or...maybe it's just what it is... Just don't think so, though.

20. That's what I was thinking too, all of a sudden bizarre news.
Well, we know they don't want to talk about torture. Swine flu is good to be aware of but of course the "news media" is going to go shark attack all over our asses about it.
But this flight fiasco is just funky. I would like to know who proposed it and for what purpose. You would think wasting all that jet fuel and causing a ruckus by flying low over NYC would have to be for a justifiable reason. Screwy.

15. My first thought .............
When I heard about this stunt, I wondered why someone didn't just Photoshop a picture of AF1 flying past the Statue of Liberty or whatever the point of this idiot exercise was. How much did this whole thing cost?

Not to warn people, especially in NYC, was unthinkable.

He should resign. He's too fucking stupid to hold any kind of responsible job. Especially that one.

not to inform the public.

If anyone is to resign, it should be whoever thought that would be a good idea. I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt that that person is Caldera.

21. I think you have a point. . It has to go byond him...he took the "fall."
I wonder if Obama even knew. Sounded to me like a Rogue Operation... Like something "Shadow Govt." would do..ala Cheney in the "old days."

But, what if Obama is getting into the GAME... I woudn't want to think that.

It doesn't go "beyond" Caldera, it probably didn't get as far as Caldera, imo.
