I've been watching Specter for some time now
and formed the impression that he wasn't happy at all for the way the Republican party has gone..particularly on the stem cell issue. He has had cancer and I'm sure he would have preferred to see an all-out research effort for stem cell cures. The torture memos coming out is what probably tipped his mind to join the Dems. Of course his opposition in the primaries helped immensely. All politicians still remain dedicated to winning.

2. He jumped for political survival
The GOP is angry at him for supporting Obama's stim package

So they are running a nutter against him in the primary, directing lots of funds towards the nutter

So...in a very classy way he told them "fuck you"

3. I hope a well backed "Independent" Democratic runs against him
If Lieberman can do it, so can we. I'll donate money to ANY independent left-wing competitor.

4. He hasn't liked his party for a long time. He hated Bush and Cheney
as much as we did. No doubt the timing has a lot to do with re-election, but he's been more Democrat than Republican for years.
