How did you come up with your DU username? - I'm curious about those that changed it recently
.
.
.

I'll reference to an old thread a year ago here so some can compare then to now.

Some changes are obvious methinks with the new Administration,

but others remain curious.

I suspect some just took advantage to "upgrade" their name with the amnesty thingie . .

others to "hide" maybe?

hmm - maybe a poll is in the making . . :freak:

I'll wait and see what the responses are here.

42. I did that for awhile.
Posted with a meaningless fragment on an email. But after posting a zillion times I changed to this, which was more planned. I chose "napoleon in rags" from the crazy guy in a Bob Dylan song, because I realized that sometimes really serious activists post here, people who should be listened to, and I am not one of them, but I still like to yammer. So I'm the guy you listen to when you've got "nothing left to lose" or something like that. :)

26. Mine would have been "pill bottle"
because if I don't keep the damned things right here, I tend to forget to take the pills and run into trouble.

I'm sure there are a few folks here at DU who think "PILL" might be an appropriate handle for me.

However, I'm a sometime weaver (warp & weft) with a nurse's sense of humor (dark to just plain sick) and a mug that keeps morphing into odder and odder shapes as I age, so Warpy it is.

Taken from an interesting name I turned up on an 18somethingorother census while doing genealogical research--Skidmore Muncy. Always thought it would be good name for a rock band. Then I ran into a young lady named Kentucky Fields on another old census. Sounds like a CW singer.

13. Mine is a Roma word
Edited on Tue Apr-28-09 03:31 PM by Chovexani
It's derived from Armenian and means "witch". I chose it as a nod to both my spiritual practice and my Romani heritage. Plus, it's just a cool word. :) I've since learned it's also the name of a gothic bellydance troupe, which makes it even more fitting for me.

BTW, because people always ask me at meetups: it's pronounced "cho-vay-SHA-knee".

I've had this screenname forever, though it's not my original handle on here. I've long since forgotten what that was (I've been here almost from day one, but re-registered because I forgot my password).

Rank as in my DUer ID (you can see the user ID by going to someone's profile and looking at the URL)

They put a 1 in front of the actual sign up, so I was the 57,099th person to sign up at DU. Ergo I'm DUer 157099.

For example, yours is 123712 - which means you were the 23,712th DUer to sign up.

It comes from a joke between me and a few friends about knuckle tattoos (two four-letter words that represent you). I joked that when I got tenure I'd get READ on my left and MORE on my right. I thought it would serve me as a reminder to get the fuck off the internet and pick up a book. It sounds snotty but its not meant to be.

I took in a very ill puppy named Creena, who unfortunately passed away. The rescue coordinator just got back from Ireland and she said the name meant "my heart" in Gaelic. I don't know if it's correct, but I thought it was sweet way to always remember the little fighter who captured my heart. It's also a slight tribute to my hilarious Irish grandmother.

33. Didn't change my username, but...
backscatter comes from my last job - I worked as a software engineer for a small company that made RFID readers, and the principle on which RFID works is radio backscatter - the reader sends out a radio signal, which is picked up by the tag's antenna, and creates a tiny amount of electricity that goes to the RFID chip, runs its circuitry and does simple tasks like reading and writing to tag memory and returning output. The output is sent out by modulating the tag's backscatter - every wire in the world that has electricity flowing through it becomes an antenna. By changing the properties of the antenna in the tag as that little bit of electricity is charged up in it, a signal can be created that's picked up by the RFID reader.

Yeah, I'm a total geek.

If you saw where I live Backwoodsbob fits perfect :P There's us in one home and the wifes neice in one and the wifes nephew in one and THOUSANDS of acres of woods around us.

I live about a half mile up an old logging road into the woods where we have no cable..no highspeed internet until four seasons wireless(Bless Them),We literally live in the middle of the woods

63. No change for me
Been online since 1990, and went originally by a numbered compuserve account, then an alpha-numeric one from Prodigy. finally joined aol, and was pleased to know i could choose my own screenname. i first ended up with "catgirl982" and I hated it, but a friend and I worked at Universal Studios at the time, and we both wanted a name associated with entertainment. he chose "backlot" and I chose "hyphenate," a title for someone who does more than just one, above-the-line job, like "writer-director" or "producer-director" or "writer-producer."

That was, oh, 1993. And one of the best reasons I like it is that it's ambiguous. In the "old" days, that was a key to a safer online experience for me, because there weren't a lot of women online back then--women technies like myself existed, but the average woman wasn't on from my experience.

The name has served me well, as it's also hard to track me down through a search engine. :)

Remember the scene of the girl who only listened to Xtian music? She kept going on and on about how she loved music and loved to dance but didn't want the devil to influence her to "dance for the flesh". I watched the documentary while commenting on it with bi-baby in the lounge one night and naturally we were both drinking so the thread was pretty funny. After that, she started calling me Fleshdancer.

So to make a short story long, it's bi-baby's fault. :D

On edit: BTW I did end up moving away from GA....

81. A very good question
After several years, I began to dislike my old name, 'Hardhead.' It seemed vaguely confrontational or arrogant, and I don't want to be perceived that way. I make a consistent effort to be calm and rational on DU, so I wanted a name that's neutral but human-sounding. Elidor is the name of some forgotten monk from way back in the Middle Ages. It has a nice personal feel and rolls nicely off the tongue.

I keep my old name in my profile so that people may adjust their ignore lists accordingly, but I think I've pretty much learned how not to mix it up anymore anyway. I'm - duh-duh-DAH!!! - an Internet Veteran. Able to walk calmly past the mangled bodies spilling out of the latest cornflake-breading war thread. Reclining comfortably with a nonchalant air in my smoking jacket as people around me scream at the top of their lungs. Or so I like to pretend.

It used to be Mike03, and it became Mike 03 after I left and had to sign up again, but yes, I regret I was not more creative because I did use my real name and I suppose someone could identify me rather easily if they also happened to be DUers.

It wouldn't hard to figure out.

Since horses consume me 24/7, and when I joined DU I really felt like the US was in the middle of a virtual storm from the Bush Admin, it all felt like the right username for me. I didn't change it during the amnesty because we're still dealing with the fall out of the Bush Admin and Obama is definitely still in the middle of it.

Perhaps my next username will be "Here comes the sun" in 2012??
