1. Hurray.
The Democratic Party of today closely resembles the Republican Party of the 60s.... And the Republicans...we won't even go into what they look like.

4. Are you a purist?
Do you think all Dems have to act and talk like Dennis Kucinich?

I, for one, like the fact that a centrist is joining the only party that allows centrists.

6. No, more of a realist...
I think reality shows the entire political spectrum has largely shifted to the right (as has the Democratic Party). I do not think Harry Truman would feel as comfortable in the current party. Thats all. Do you feel that this man has evolved his ideas more liberally or has stood in pretty much that same place while his other party left him behind (and the Democrats caught up to him)? Im think this is all bittersweet.

I wish the Democrats left him in the cold and ran a real liberal against him in the next election. I thought he was vulnerable.

10. We're talking about Pennsylvania.
The kind of liberal you want to see wouldn't get elected there.

26. We could certainly get a Dem WAY better than Specter
Thanks to selfish Specter we get to chose between a neo-con Repuke and a Repuke with a "D" tattooed on his forehead. I fucking live here, and if not for Specter tattooing that "D" we would have had an excellent shot on getting a REAL Dem in that seat. We replaced crazy Santorum with a Dem a hell of a lot closer to being a real Dem than Repuke-in-"D"-clothing Specter.

7. Centrist?
Jesus -- by old Democratic standards, Dennis Kucinich is a centrist. Everyone else in the party is to the right of Richard Nixon, for crying out loud.

13. What universe are you from?
Kucinich has never been a centrist, by anyone's analysis.

That is taking Chomsky's argument to an illogical extreme.

"Department of Peace"???? Tell me how well that would have fared in 1968? 1958? 1948? 1938?

27. Dennis is my congress critter and I love that he grandstands and all
but people have to realize that is what he really is; a grandstander.

How he keeps getting elected here in the moderate Cleveland Suburbs; Great constituent service.

18. easier path to the goal
I think there may be an easier path to that goal, and you may want to consider it. Why don't we all just move over to the Republican party? That would actually hurt the right wing - can you imagine? Welcoming Specter in doesn't hurt the right wing at all.

If the goal is one big happy centrist moderate corporate-owned party, what difference does it make what label it has? What is in a name, anyway? Of course, perhaps people have a lot invested in brand Democrat - in merchandise with the word "Democratic" stenciled on it, maybe? That would explain a lot, wouldn't it?

There is one problem with my suggestion - the Republicans probably wouldn't have us, unless we changed our views. They would probably refuse to support us unless we did. Merely tacking an "R" after our names wouldn't fool them. In that way, they differ from how you are asking us to be.

21. One difference, certainly is that the Democratic base is the middle working classes.
The GOP base tends to be more corporate and wealthy. They both have to support their bases whether they want to or not. It is amazing how brilliant the GOP has been in courting working class voters. But, as we know, they do that by appealing to bigots, racists and the religiously intolerant, oh, and the cowardly. They "keep us safe". Ah huh. They "wreck the country" is more like it.

This is the 21st century and the politics of the 1960's don't translate across the board. Democrats, hopefully, realize that. Obama does. The principles and values are the same, but the world has changed and so must our approaches in building an environment in which people can prosper. The French have learned this. And we must sort it out, as well. They are moving to the center from the left, and we must move in that direction from the right, which is where the GOP has dragged us as a country.

These are interesting times. We really need to have a discussion in this country about how we shape our government, what it's roles and purposes are. The terms conservative and liberal almost have no real meaning now for a majority of the American people. We can thank the GOP propaganda machine for that. But, not only do we need to reset the center, we need to consider what that is, what that means.

25. In the 60's, the GOP was held together by New England moderates
and crazy western conservatives...

It wasn't until Nixon came along and cobbled together the silent majority, ie closet racists, that the GOP started to gain ground nationally.

I don't understand your attempt at an analogy at all.

The GOP was in deep minority status in Congress throughout the 60's.

No matter what they say, this was a tremendous blow to the Republicans today. It was not so long ago that they were bullying Democrats and saying "You are either with us or against us."
