By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer – 28 mins ago
WASHINGTON – Federal officials warned on Tuesday that swine-flu related deaths were likely in the United States as the disease that killed scores in Mexico continued to spread across the world and governments intensified steps to battle the outbreak.
The number of confirmed cases in the United States was raised to 64, but states and cities were reporting more suspected cases. In New York, the city's health commissioner said "many hundreds" of schoolchildren were ill at a school where some students had confirmed cases.
President Barack Obama asked Congress for $1.5 billion in emergency funds to fight the fast-spreading disease.

5. So doctor Besser is panicking?
What about Secretary Napolitano?

Oh no, they are telling us to be concerned, NOT to panic

6. There's a thread in the Lounge, of all places, describing how
people are preparing. Aside from the joke posts, people are making sure they have what they need if they are quarantined or sick at home for a week or so.

7. Lounge lizards at times are more mature about this
Hell I could tell people to do the prudent thing (and as is you should for OTHER natural disasters) but people would say I am running around causing a panic

I don't know what gets into the water at this place, but serious issues follow Gandhi dictum every time

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

For the record it may be misattributed, but hey, it fits

of a flu epidemic. And as a former boyscout, I appreciate the value of preparedness. But you have to acknowledge that Americans do tend to run around flapping their arms and squawking when something like this comes along. That said, I'll probably be keeping my granddaughter at arms length until we see where this is headed.

14. The flapping has been done by some in the media
actually

And a few here

But we also have seen an interesting problem

Any article from sources like AP, or god sakes journal reviews, are just an effort to scare people

That meme is dangerous

Hell I knew some about how this works, but I have learned a LOT from others in the last few days

8. Nadin, I used to love this place, but why do you think it has descended
so horribly from a place where intelligent people discussed issues that were complicated to a place where you have to either be as exploitative as Alex Jones or so dense that you don't even understand the very basics of an issue enough to believe that there is an issue?

You either have to believe the flu is a homicidal conspiracy or that it simply doesn't exist.

What happened to thinking around here?

Honestly, this is getting so depressing.

Just at a moment in history where we should be evolving rapidly, we seem to be devolving.

13. One word, FEAR
so many complex things are happening that most people have no grasp of that they feel helpless

If we ignore it, it will go away or won't affect me

Why people also ignored the economy and kept saying it was not going to happen... could not happen you were here.

We had that for the bird flu. We are going over the same old tired ground... but we feel we need to repeat a lot of the very basic info, which I have to realize it is not basic

Also size.

This place is not our small community

So essentially we are breaking into self excluding communities

My ignore list speaks to it

I never ever had anybody on it, until 2006

They went up during the primaries, and every crisis a few more people go in

21. Thinking has always in short supply
Most people go through life following their noses until something startles them awake. We don't really evolve. Some of us don't even learn.

18. Dr. Besser's statement was made YESTERDAY. You reported it already YESTERDAY. Several times.

The two US deaths you were so sure would be flu - WEREN'T.

Increase in US confirmed cases between yesterday & today, per WHO = 24, most in the same NYC school as the initial bulk of cases.

no deaths, 7 brief hospitalizations, most cases already recovered, "mild" symptoms.
