Hinchey attends Progressive Caucus meeting with Obama

WASHINGTON - Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, joined more than two dozen members of the House Progressive Caucus at a meeting Tuesday afternoon with President Barack Obama to discuss health care reform.
Members of the liberal Democratic group would prefer a universal health care system in which the federal government would provide single-payer coverage, but Hinchey acknowledged that the political support for such a system is lacking.
Tuesday's discussion focused on a way to provide coverage to the nation's millions of uninsured through legislation similar to the State Children's Health Insurance Program, which Congress expanded earlier this year.
"It was a positive thing just to talk about this issue and interact between the president and the Congress,'' said Hinchey, who described the discussions as preliminary and inconclusive. "It’s the first time the group of us got together with him to talk about this issue.''
Other members of the New York congressional delegation who attended the session included New York City Reps. Yvette Clarke and Jerrold Nadler.
