1. Who would have dreamed the day Iowa was more progressive than California?
No offense to either state's residents...but it is glaringly strange.

8. That is the great secret YOY...
Quietly, we have been building the bluest of the blues here in Iowa.. All children are covered with insurance, We are the second wind greatest users of wind energy, and green job development is huge.. We build those beautiful turbines that are so graceful.. but keep it under your hat, we are also one of the most educated states in the union..

shhhhhh.. pack your bags and move to Iowa, Canada wishes it was Iowa :)...

about tolerance and caring for all Americans. Iowa is a shining example of what all states can aspire to be.

I meant that Iowa couldn't teach Florida anything because Florida wasn't very good at learning...

to add the "dripping sarcasm" emotie when making a snarky comment (lame joke or not :)). And I'm with you on the sad reality of Florida's inadequacies, including its inability to learn from the shining example of others.

115. oh dear. I'm afraid that you're caught up in a bit of unreasonable
chauvenism. I'm subject to doing that with my state too. Had Iowa had the same opportunity to vote that CA did, there's no doubt that it would have voted as CA did. In fact, Iowa did do that. The Iowas SC decided on marriage equality, not the Iowa citizenry.

116. Great post but...
2 things.

First, Canada does not wish it was Iowa. Arkansas might but Canada is still more progressive than just about anywhere in the US. Yes, you have all children covered but Canada has all Citizens and residents covered. Not to put down Iowa. It's a great place - 76 trombones and all.

Second of all. I used to live in Oregon. You Iowans need to develop something to tell to others about your state that will obviate ever good thing you say about it so that you don't get an influx of ditto headed rush listeners looking to suck up the good life without paying for it. In Oregon we used the old life is great here, but the winters suck. It rains for 6 months straight without letting up. Your feet develop webbed toes. Etc.

Iowa has done a fantastic job of building itself into a progressive state from the ground up. Now just start working on exporting some of that to the rest of the country, will ya?

34. I don't know. If you read the NYT article on this a few days ago, even some people
who don't want gay marriage, don't think it is their place to tell other people what to do.

There is a pretty strong sense in Iowa that it isn't right or fair to force your views on other people (who are keeping to themselves and not doing anything wrong).

A basic "mind your own business" sense of fairness that seems very Iowa.

You better be perfect (stones and glass houses) before you go around telling other people what to do - and even if you were, that still wouldn't make it right.

The Times they are a Changin'. :)

113. As a Californian, I take no offense. I find it not only glaringly strange....
...but painful. I am and always will be ashamed of my state for falling for the bullshit and fear mongering of Prop. 8 proponents, and ignoring entirely the fact that it was going to destroy real lives. I try to keep in mind it was only 50% plus a little that did it, but I'm still sorry and appalled by those 50% plus. Here's to Iowa, a state that had more sense, more fairness, more morality, more love than my state did. They've every right to be proud.

131. I think the outcome might've been different
had Iowans been given the chance to vote on same-sex marriage.

Please note that I'm not casting aspersions or any green vegetables on the good people of Iowa. I'm actually lamenting Kollyforniya's lameozoid constitution, which allows any nimrod with the resources to get 600,000-odd signatures and the money for the filing fee to put discrimination on a ballot.

We were all sure Prop 8 would go down in flames — too sure, it seems.

180. It probably would be different if Iowa voted as compared to CA.
Keep in mind, the stupidity in CA is that it took only a majority. So one person over %50 percent was all that was required. I believe that it's tougher and wiser in Iowa. Two-Thirds? If CA had required two-thirds, then Prop. 8 would not have passed.

106. From Wikipedia......
Civil rights and law enforcement
In the 2004 debate surrounding the Federal Marriage Amendment, Cornyn released an advance copy of a speech he was to give at the Heritage Foundation. In the speech, he wrote, "It does not affect your daily life very much if your neighbor marries a box turtle. But that does not mean it is right ... ow you must raise your children up in a world where that union of man and box turtle is on the same legal footing as man and wife." He removed the reference to the box turtle in the actual speech, but the Washington Post ran the quote, as did The Daily Show.<18><19>

Cornyn sponsored a bill that would allow law enforcement to force anyone arrested or detained to provide samples of their DNA, which would be recorded in a central database.<20> He voted to recommend a constitutional ban on flag desecration and for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman. He also voted for the reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act and extending its wiretap provision. He is rated an A by the National Rifle Association.<16> Senator John Cornyn said on December 20, 2005: "None of your civil liberties matter much after you're dead" in a speech supporting reauthorizing the PATRIOT Act.<21>

I use to work at an exotic reptile shop down in Florida, and without a doubt, the turtles were my favorite. Anyone who hasn't seen a turtle happily chow down on some lettuce and a strawberry hasn't really lived, as far as I'm concerned.....

LOVE IS IN THE AIR (John Paul Young)

Love is in the air
Everywhere I look around
Love is in the air
Every sight and every sound

And I don't know if I'm being foolish
Don't know if I'm being wise
But it's something that I must believe in
And it's there when I look in your eyes

Love is in the air
In the whisper of the trees
Love is in the air
In the thunder of the sea

And I don't know if I'm just dreaming
Don't know if I feel sane
But it's something that I must believe in
And it's there when you call out my name

15. "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
16. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?
17. Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
18. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
19. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

And

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

There is nothing loving, joyful, peaceful, gentle, good, meek, tempered about your post. I therefore must watch out for you and your false message. it does not come from God who's evidence is the Fruits of the Spirit.

Bye Bye

50. Leviticus 11:9-12
9 These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.
12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

Deuteronomy 14:9-10 says:
9 These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat:
10 And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you.

84. I've heard that the interpretation of that section in Leviticus is just wrong.
It should read, a man that lies down with a "boy" shall be put to death. It was speaking of abusing children. Apparently, we've always had a problem with pedophiles thru out history. Which makes more sense since in the first section of that book, they speak of a great love between two men which was greater than a love between a man and a woman. Then again, there are many things thru the books that have been interpreted carelessly. AND who knows how much the Catholic church has hidden away from us.

148. The problem with the interpretation of 18:22 is with context.
Taken out of context, it is easy to understand why it would be interpreted as a cut and dried prohibition of sexual acts between two adult males. Nothing is said of homosexuality or sexual acts between two adult females, but this passage is often extrapolated to encompass these meanings.

The prohibition is found within a section of the law code dealing with idolatry. Chapters 17 and 19 are about idolatry so it stands to reason that Chapter 18 probably is too, especially with the way the chapter concludes. In Chapter 18, verses 6-18 address what constitutes incest, verse 19 prohibits sex with a menstruating female and verse 20 prohibits adultery with a neighbor's wife. Given a general prohibition against adultery, one would think this goes without saying, but apparently the redactors felt it needed saying again.

The verse immediately preceeding 18:22 forbids ritual child sacrifice to a specifically named god and blasphemy against Yahweh. The verse immediately following prohibits bestiality.

The interesting portion is the next several verses:

24 " 'Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. 25 Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. 26 But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the aliens living among you must not do any of these detestable things, 27 for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. 28 And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.

It is my belief that these are injunctions against temple practices of the peoples already in Canaan (i.e. the people whose land we want to take) as observed by the Israelites -- or as understood or imagined a thousand years later by the priests editing the Hebrew Scriptures.

Whatever it's meaning, my ethical and moral compass is not dependent upon scriptural authority so all of this is but a fascinating academic exercise to me. At any rate, I'm pretty comfortable arguing with my homophobic right-wing relatives that their pastor's rantings and ravings are not based on sound biblical hermeneutics.

according the the warped interpretations done by fundy nutjobs - they claim that there is scription that blatently comes out against homosexuality even though homosexuality is not mentioned in said scripture.

So groups, like "God Hates Shrimp" show up at this Westboro style "God Hates F**" and hold up signs using another obcure scripture in the same book of the bible that says animals from the sea without fin are evil and people who eat those food will also rot in hell. They are there to mock the assholes

The original sign he's holding doesn't say 'shrimp'. Look at the edge of the exclamation mark.

Edit: Upon further review, I think I am totally mistaken. Some sort of wierd compression artifact. I guess he just walks up and stands next to the people holding the 'real' signs.

If these people are ever in town, I'll go to Kinko's and whip up a 'Crustaceans are an Abomination' 'Crab Salads Burn In Hell' sign.

I'm sitting here responding while wearing a 50/50 cotton/poly sweatshirt, so I'm presumably going to the Hot Dark Place, too -- according to the assclowns rightly being mocked.
Maybe I'll letter up a sign that says "God Hates My Sweatshirt." I mean, it makes just as much sense, right?
John
I heard somewhere -- either way back in Catholic grade school or later during one of my then-frequent acid trips, that the word "abomination" didn't really mean that which pissed God off, but only that which was very uncommon. It made sense to me, which almost certainly precludes having possibly heard it from the Catholics. Truth is, I don't really remember much before 1989.
And I still hate shrimp.

163. No no no, "God Hates Figs"

GOD HATES FIGS

JESUS REBUKED THE FIG AS
AN EVIL ABOMINATION

Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.
And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and
found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no
fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig
tree withered away. And when the disciples saw it, they
marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!

Matthew 21:18-20

JESUS COMMANDED US NOT TO
EAT OF THE CURSED FIG

The next day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry:
And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply
he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he
found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. And
Jesus answered and said to it, No man eat fruit of thee
hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.

Mark 11:12-14

GOD PROMISES TERRIBLE VENGEANCE
UPON ANY FIG-LOVING NATION

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them
the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them
like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil."

Jeremiah 29:17

104. Great job, Iowa!
I spent most of my childhood making fun of Iowa (raised in Nebraska, it was a requirement). But now I'll keep my snark reserved solely for your football teams. ;)

Congratulations, Iowans. I'm sitting in California feeling very proud of you all, wishing you were joining us instead of showing us up.

121. I read a couple of complaint letters posted in the Sun-Times
They had a big front page pic of two Black women kissing in celebration in yesterday's edition! I'd like to say it was a gutsy move, but they have been doing the tabloid covers for awhile now.

... performing all those weddings years ago.

Blessings on Iowa, clearly a hidden treasure!

Whoever woulda guessed it?

Progress marches on....

Next stop: Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky....

137. Iowa is not a red state
It voted for Gore and Obama, and the margin for Kerry was super close.

I know it's hard for some people to believe that there can be Democrats between the coasts, but seriously.

139. Well, after my own state (Colorado) went blue....
... in November 2008, I believe anything is possible.

If we can forge ahead with a Progressive agenda in states like these, then the sky is the limit!

Maybe one day Colorado will catch up with Iowa. We can hope.

And those states will just take longer than most.

I cannot imagine considering oneself a "progressive" while willing to deny equal protection under the law to a particular group of citizens.

do explain what you mean by 'sanctity' and why it is only for a man and woman. Explain it in terms that have any relationship to civil law. Oh and while your at it you can tell those children they don't deserve the protections of have their parents married as well.

Sanctity of Marriage? Marriage is so damned holy and sacred that I've done it THREE TIMES! And nobody (though someone probably should have) tried to put roadblocks up on any of mine.
Sanctity and sanctimony have the same root. But I'm sure you already know that.
John
Now I'm just happily shacked up with my SO Polly. Does that concern you as well? I hope not -- but if it does, I suggest you go hump your Magic Holy Book until the vapors go away.

Missed the deleted posts. I give thanks every day that I'm not a bitter bigot who can't delight in the joy of others. What a crappy way to live. Yeah, we got some in our party. Tough shit for them - they're on the wrong side of the arc of justice and they know it, and in future generations their descendants will be ashamed.
