The compromise that got us Specter?
Just speculation on my part but the first thing I thought of today was Specter pulling away from supporting EFCA a few weeks ago.

Now he becomes a Democrat?! Just doesn't fit.

So I think there is a compromise at play here. The Democrats are going to drop EFCA and help Specter win his 2010 election in exchange for him switching to the Democratic party and taking them to 60 in the Senate.

So I am afraid we lost EFCA. And that is a huge loss. Much bigger in the long run than gaining Specter.

Remember what Thom Hartman says - strong unions are necessary for a strong middle class. EFCA is critical for rebuilding our unions.

I hope I am wrong about Specter.

Thoughts?

1. No but we are likely to see EFCA change --discussions
are already underway. Spector will support a changed EFCA after a bit of time has passed--think end of summer. He was in meetings the last three days with PA labor leaders and with Hoffa and others from Change to Win.

3. I'm thinking/hoping the other way around
Specter pulled away from EFCA hoping it would make up for voting for the stimulus. It didn't. It also probably brought down the wrath of the unions in Pennsylvania who had promised to help him in the Republican primary should he support EFCA.

No matter which way he went, he was doomed should he stay a Republican. The Democrats have probably agreed to not run a primary challenger against him, but his best interest now is to support EFCA.

7. I would hope there were assurances..
made about major legislation, including EFCA. There are plenty of ways to provide cover for Specter to vote for things he has stated he is against.
