Mexico: Swine flu toll stabilizing
The toll from the swine flu epidemic appears to be stabilizing in Mexico, the health secretary said late Tuesday, with only seven more suspected deaths. But an outbreak of the virus at a New York school showed it is capable of repeated jumps between humans — meaning it can keep spreading around the world.

The new virus is suspected in 159 deaths and 2,498 illnesses across Mexico, said Health Secretary Jose Cordova, who called the death toll "more or less stable" even as hospitals are swamped with people who think they have swine flu. And he said only 1,311 suspected swine flu patients remain hospitalized, a sign that treatment works for people who get medical care quickly.

The positive news came even as the first two countries announced travel bans on flights from Mexico, the center of the epidemic, and as confirmed cases were reported for the first time as far away as New Zealand and Israel, joining the United States, Canada, Britain and Spain.

OK, thanks for the panic, time to talk about, politics again.

29. I never saw any of those either.
I saw people posting the reports, much like you have in this OP. No more, no less. When the story broke, many said that we have no way of knowing where it could go, and that was(and still is) true.

I never read, here, that we were all going to die horrible pork deaths or a world without humans, and definitely not en masse.

3. Facts don't matter
but he was late to the party, and I didn't even read it on the MSM, but El Universal

They also found 13 of the confirmed cases were presumptive, at CDC when Manitoba found them positive,

IF that is the case (I expect them next to go to Stockholm) the death rate is also lower than first expected

Never mind that if the flu establishes itself OUTSIDE Mexico, like it is appearing to do in NYC... that raises concerns as well

So it is a mixture of good and bad news

And why some of us have been following the numbers not that our "Friend" got it no matter how many times we tried to splain that

5. blah-blah, the "numbers", blah-blah, the "facts"
MEXICO CITY – The number of deaths authorities are blaming on Mexico’s swine-flu outbreak stood at 155 on Tuesday, though only 20 of those fatalities have been definitively linked to the A/H1N1 virus...

...the secretary had said at a press conference that the panorama was “hopeful,” since the death rate due to the outbreak of swine flu had fallen over the past three days.

He also said that there had been a reduction in the number of people infected in the last few hours, since on Monday there were 110 cases compared with 119 on Sunday and 141 on Saturday.

Cordova said that starting Tuesday laboratory tests will start in Mexico to confirm the presence in patients of the A/H1N1 virus, since up to now samples have been send outside the country because of the lack of equipment for making the diagnosis here.

He said that by Wednesday, when additional equipment is due to arrive, Mexico will be able to carry out as many as 600,000 tests per day.

Mexico City’s mayor, Marcelo Ebrard, said Tuesday that since Saturday the cases of probable contagion of swine flu in the capital have diminished....Nonetheless, between Monday night and Tuesday morning, three more deaths were recorded that could have been caused by the disease, as well as 31 probable infections.

...On Monday 14 people were released from hospital, the highest figure since the epidemic began, although 89 patients remain hospitalized with symptoms compatible with those of swine flu.

The city’s health secretary, Armando Ahued, said that only 29 of the 6,610 people who went to clinics Monday complaining of flu symptoms required hospitalization.

11. There are those parts of the world moving into their flu seasons.
Australia and New Zealand come to mind. Maybe because I live in the former.

The potential is there. Will the potential become reality? Only time will tell. We can certainly hope not. AND take some reasonable precautions to reduce the chances.

Some people are over the top in their dire predictions, just as others are way too complacently blase in declaring nothing will come of it.

15. The masks, an expert today said something that I found interesting
their use, though marginally useful, make those who are blasé take it more seriously and those who'd panic feel empowered

:-)

Take care and unlike our friends here, NYC is not out of the woods either

(And here is a piece of trivia to you, why they made the comment about october... the three other major outbreaks came in waves, the first two well defined, the third one not so much... the first wave was relatively mild)

Stay safe, wash hands, listen to local authorities

The adults are at work

30. Parts of South America are probably moving to their flu season, too.
Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, parts of Brazil and some Andean countries like Bolivia and parts of Peru may also be going into flu season.

My understanding is that there is quite a bit of commercial travel between Mexico and South American countries that might spread the flu.
