The desperate new meme of the Republicans: we're losing b/c we're no longer fiscal conservatives.
At least that's Joey's main theme. His idea evidently is that all the Republicans in Congress have to do is to go back to being the party of small government.

Time after time, other commentators tell him this is not necessarily the case. It's more a matter of their LACK of attention to the needs of the citizenry by the federal government that is making so many Republicans leave the party.

This is desperation talk. Even Tina Brown tried to explain it to him, saying that the Republicans continue to drink the Kool Aid. Smerconish mentioned the Republicans fatal attraction to litmus tests.

Ain't workin' Joe. Take a clue, buddy...

1. I think Chris Matthews had it right when he was on Keith's show last night.
He said the Pubs made two major decisions in the last 50/60 years. The first was to join with the Dixicrats after Johnson passed the civil rights laws and all the Southern Dems who were upset turned Republican. The second decision was to coddle up to the religious RW in the 80's. Now, all that's left in the Party are the remainder of those two groups & they're shrinking!

2. Of course. Any reasonable person would agree.
Joey's just in denial. I guess he has to believe it...so sad, too bad.

4. Now they're gonna turn Dem, pour big buckos into primaries, and infiltrate
the Dem Party and ruin it.

Wonder where Dems will flee?

8. Either the Greens, or a new Progressive Party.
The effective destruction of the Republican Party would force a division in the Democratic Party, as I said here yesterday: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=5554090&mesg_id=5554090

We're either going to see a minor course correction by the Republicans, or a major political realigning like 1824 and 1856. Which it ends up being is up to the Republicans, unfortunately.

11. Well, maybe we should take them on their Democrat Socialist Party name.
It's got no room for ConservaDems.

5. I think it was a big part of why they lost in 2006, and they learned that lesson too well.

6. Well, I think that is part of why they lost a lot of voters they normally might have gotten.
It's far from the only reason though.

7. That's always their meme when they lose
"we weren't conservative ENOUGH! That's why we lost!"

It could't possibly be that the voters simply think you're wron-headed on most issues. Nooooooooo.

9. This is the first true statement I've heard from the republicans in a long while.
It was when their overspending, together with deregulation, finally caused total economic collapse that they fell.

Conservatives conserve things, like money, natural resources, etc. The GOP has become the party of non-cons.
