Morning Joe Summary for the 29th Wednesday
Edited on Wed Apr-29-09 09:14 AM by annabanana
Re Specter Story:

Pat: 100% opportunism and the Dems will have as much trouble with him as the Repubs did.

Joe: (BIG BOOK PLUG) Talks about the shrinkage of the Repubs is because they moved away from "real" conservatism..

Politico guy: It's because Joe Biden is still working out at the Senate gym where he's been encouraging Specter's switch.

Howard Dean: Cites Specter's mention of the influence of the "Club for Growth" which he calls a far right group, fiscally speaking..Joe objected to the "far right" label, calls them libertarians out of the Cato institute. Howard responded that Toomey wraps the fundies in so tight it's indistinguishable on the ground. Tina Brown mentioned that there's a DANGER for DEMS now that they're "running the show".. Howard agreed and admits that there may be more infighting (Thanks Howard... sheesh)

Joe likes the idea that Specter's defection will put more pressure on other blue dogs.. that THEY may end up in the "60th vote" position.. He asked Evan Bayh about this later in the program, who said that everybody votes their conscience. . big surprise there...

Smerconish said he's hearing from every last 21 percenter in Pa.. They're furious. He wonders what would happen if Toomey ended up not being the Repug candidate.. What would happen if they ran a more moderate repug there... He was basically told that it wasn't gonna happen

They repeated the "Now EVERYTHING will be the fault of Obama & the Dems" thing. . (Chuck Todd reinforced this slant). Andrea got historical.. "goes back to Bork days"

Joe spent some time on the plight of the Repugs. (some more "book flacking"). . the demographic pressures.. (not getting ANY minorities OR kids) fears for the party in Texas with Hispanic voter increase. .

The Buchanosaurus went straight to race.. Is still major Fundy booster.. knows he's out of step and doesn't care. Joe is ready to throw the Fundies under the bus.

Valerie Jarett joked that Joe should switch parties, but "We like Pat right where he is". .

~~*****~~

The other political story they covered was The First 100 Days...
The primary emphasis was on the poll numbers that showed how much Obama is LIKED.. "He is liked better than his policies are. That means he's like REAGAN. A good communicator." In other words, the policies aren't all that important..... It's all PR . . (It always IS with these guys, isn't it?). The "right track/wrong track" numbers are all about how much Americans like the guy...

Andrea called Obama "Reaganesque". . It's the "Leadership" that counts.. (anyone know how to put that little trademark circle next to the word leadership.. clearly it belongs to Reagan.. Obama's just borrowing it..

This was all followed with an interview with a guy from the Atlantic Council, which is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall.. (and whose function Mika & Joe will be attending tonight) They didn't talk too much about Reagan during this segment... The hero of THIS story was GHWB.. who modestly didn't take credit for the reunification of Germany, in spite of the fact that he was apparently the prime moving force. . (who knew?).. they DID throw a bone to Reagan's "courage" in going to Bitberg that time...

This covers the gist of the morning..

Oh.. And Politico guy mentioned that the Chamber of Commerce is running tort reform ads at movie theaters...

'whew'. . Done for the day.

2. Reagan was a leader? I lived through 1980-1988 and didn't know that.

5. Thanks and did you see Mica at the very beginning?
She looked like she just woke up.
She was getting a large bottle out of her bag and talking as if she had a hang over.
It seemed to me that they were not aware they were on the air.

Thanks for this post because I can't stand to look at them and ruin my morning.
