WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The 23-month-old child who died in Texas of the new swine flu virus was a Mexican who traveled to the United States for medical treatment, a spokeswomen for the Houston health department told CNN on Wednesday.

"The child came to Houston for medical treatment. The family had traveled to South Texas. The child became ill and they transported the child to Houston for medical care," Houston health department spokeswoman Kathy Barton told CNN by telephone.

5. I did not read
that they brought him here for medical care, I read the they were in Brownsville visiting family when the child became sick. the underlying medical problems may have been a factor in this tragedy........ prayers for the family.

4. The child died in a US HOSPITAL, in a US CITY.
That does NOT take the US death toll back to zero.

The ONLY reason to differentiate between national death rates is to differentiate between levels of available care. This child had the same care as ANYONE in the US. And he died.

The bug is not asking what fucking language you speak before it strikes.

Jesus fucking christ - grow up.

9. Thank you. It definitely counts as a US death. National death stats
are NOT by nation of citizenship, but by WHERE they died.

12. But it's still an important fact....
In determining the path and timing of the disease, as well as what factors have been making it more fatal in Mexican citizens than the US citizens.

If the child was from Mexico, then when it contracted the virus, his health at the time of contracting the virus, as well as things like environmental background, how long between the flu manifesting itself, time of treatment, etc. are all important factors. Not only in terms of understanding this strain but also in terms of helping people understand what is involved for their own health.

15. It's VERY important. I'm quite sure the CDC is aware. And the WHO.
And the TX health dept, if they have one.

10. maybe they will. maybe they won't, since the child died on us soil.
but that piece of information is reported as one of the reasons WHO didn't declare level 5 today. so they apparently found it significant.

11. Where was that specifically reported as one of the reasons WHO didn't declare level 5?
That seems like a poor criteria, but what do I know.
