Schaaf pokes fun at swine flu on House floor

JEFFERSON CITY | As The Star reported last night, swine flu has landed in Missouri.

And so, of course, here come the jokes on the House floor.

Rep. Rob Schaaf, a St. Joseph Republican and physician, appeared on the floor this morning wearing a facemask.

Even before he could speak, though, Rep. Jason Brown, a Republican from Platte County, where the first probable case of swine flu was reported, took the floor to chastise Schaaf's attempt at levity.

17. That's it. So far this flu has done insignificant damage to us.

With any luck, it will never amount to anything in all the countries it has spread to, and we will pick up a whole bunch of new antibodies with very few funerals.

But, since we still don't know why it has killed Mexicans and not us, the fact that NONE of us have a defense against this new flu should keep us sober and respectful until we can heave a well-earned sigh of relief.
