Are BMW drivers arseholes or do arseholes just buy BMWs?
Stay with me...this is political.

I live in an affluent area and there are a lot of expensive cars around. Whenever I encounter a BMW, 9 times out of 10 it is:

1. Speeding
2. Cutting someone off
3. Driver on phone
4. Driver with head up arse
5. Changing lanes without signaling
6. Changing multiple lanes at once
7. All of the above or any combination

Now, I'm not saying ALL BWM drivers are bad, but my experience is that they are the worst. I see similar behavior from Audis, Porches and Mercedes to a lesser extent. Now, I know some people in particular that own these cars and they tend to be right-wing, self absorbed and well-connected enough that when they are pulled over for going 97 mph in a 55 zone, they get it thrown out of court!

Now, I am going to make an assumption that these same rich, bad drivers are part of the base of the GOP and their attitude while driving is their attitude towards government and politics.

First, the rules don't apply to them because they're rich.
Second, everyone else is the problem as in, they are using the road they wanted to use and should just move over for them.
Third, they don't think about possibly hurting other people or the utter horror they could bring on others with their recklessness - they only see what THEY want.
and finally, No matter what they do, the can get out of trouble so there's no reason to follow any rules like the peasants must.

Anyone else had these experiences? Thanks for reading my roadrage venting!

I understand that they're supposed to be great, but I could never spend that kind of money on a car. It's just not that important to me, I guess. Cars are necessary for me to get from point A to point B and not much more.

Assholes buy BMWs and BMWs are driven by assholes. Neither can exist comfortably without the other. Hummers have the same relationship with dumbfucks.

His 2001 BMW 540 collided with a palm tree in Santa Barbara on Monday night. He was wearing his seatbelt and the airbags deployed but the car was split in two and he died on impact.

You would have hated him, I guess.

Do you mean he hit a palm tree.... RIP to him, but it sounds like he does indeed fit the mold of a BMW driver.

I explained why I was asking the question which seemed obvious at least to me to be tongue in cheek. I think you're being thin-skinned, too.

I see a lot of people joking around in here...or commenting on how they chose their particular mode of transportation or as I meant when I started this, discussing how the way one drives (and maybe even WHAT one drives) might be an extension of their lifestyle and political opinions.

3. no, no, no...
It's teh asshole character that desires teh BMW. It's not a "look at me, I'm rich" thing, not at all. These people believe that they are better drivers and have more important things to do than the common man... so they act like dicks (and dickettes)

It's NOT a right/left thing...

In SoCal I see more Obama/Biden stickers on BMW/MB/Audi's... you will NEVER see bumper stickers on Porsche. Porsche owners... that's another mindset altogether where the car is superior rather than the driver. A Porsche owner realizes that the ride is greater than himself... the BMW owner uses the ride to MAKE himself great.

I've never heard "dickette" before. LMAO!

I don't think I've ever seen ANY bumpersticker on a luxury car here. I'm not saying that all BMW owners are right-wingers. Of course that's not the case. But I'm wondering if there's a relationship between what you drive and how you live. Is there an attitude that's on display.

There's a saying about how your car is how you want people to see you and your house is how you see yourself. Or something like that....

There is very little moderation it seems.

In Maine we have these main driver groups:
- People from CT and MA that want to drive 85 but don't realize we don't have a 85mph travel lane
- People from CT and MA that want to drive 45 and look at pretty things
- People from ME that want to drive 45 and look at pretty things they've already seen 1000 times before
- People from ME that want to drive 75 and get where they've going
- People from FL that somehow made it up here and forgot how to get home

I tend to gravitate toward the "arsehole BMW" driver end of the spectrum most of the time.

or what they build or work on, etc. My first car was a Chevy Cavalier from a Dealership where my uncle was a mechanic. He did most of my work for free. I loved that car and it ran great for 8 years! Even then the problems were minor, but I have no mechanical ability, had moved far from my uncle and was commuting into the city. I hated to so it go.

Choice is one of the benefits of capitalism, I guess, and we have lots of choices.

I follow all rules of the road.

That said, there are plenty of people driving mini-vans, trucks and economy cars who are TERRIBLE drivers.

45. You're no Sherlock Holmes.
I don't need an expensive car, house or clothes to prove things to others. Sure, nice things are great, but I think most people need to keep up with the Joneses rather than find real happiness. (HINT: It's not from material things.) I follow this philosophy:

"So what does this Methuselah have to say to you, since he has lived so long? I'll pass on to you what another Methuselah said to me. He's Joe Heller, author, as you know, of Catch 22. We were at a party thrown by a multi-billionaire out on Long Island, and I said, ''Joe, how does it make you feel to realize that only yesterday our host probably made more money than Catch 22, one of the most popular books of all time, has grossed world-wide over the past forty years?''

Joe said to me, ''I have something he can never have.''

I said, ''What's that, Joe?''

And he said, ''The knowledge that I've got enough.''' - Kurt Vonnegut

I owned in a house fire in Aug 07, I know what it is real, what is stuff, what is irreplaceable.

I drive my car because I enjoy it and I happen to be an excellent, considerate driver.

Lousy drivers own all kinds of cars; something's eating you about BMW drivers or you wouldn't single them out for generalized scorn.

Just MHO.

57. Sorry for your misfortune.
But frankly, I can single out whomever I like and discuss my own experiences which is what I did. I asked others to share their experiences AND if they saw the connection that I do with people I know personally.

If you're a good driver - bravo! I'm sure there are lousy drivers in all kinds of cars, but I've seen an attitude in certain people that drive certain vehicles (BMW) and a connection with their attitude towards politics. I explained what was eating me about these drivers and my experiences with them both from those I know and those I don't.

MHO is that some people protest too much and take things very personally. Sure, I generalized. Very few things are 100% true, but I see a trend in my life so I brought it up.

Who knew luxury car owners had such thin skin? ;-) :yoiks:

What do you drive, if we're being fair. I'll start a "joke thread" on drivers of those.

Your not bashing the car. Your bashing the people who own them. I am none of those things you say BMW drivers are, and your "thin skin" bullshit argument is boring. You have yet to prove my sensitivity. I'm merely challenging your stereotyping illusions... of which you have been woefully quiet about.

Also, I find it interesting that other posters "Miss the point" from you, but in a "humor" thread" which you're telling me it is, then there should be no "point" necessary. So make up your mind.

Not my fault and others don't seem confused. Perhaps it has to do with the thickness of the cranium?

I'll type s----l-----o-----w-----e-----r just for you!

I started this post about MY experience with the multitude of BMW drivers in my area. I didn't imagine their behavior on the road - I've seen it MANY MANY times. (Other posters here joking about this didn't imagine it either, I'm sure) Plus, I brought up other vehicles as did other posters. Then I brought up that I personally know several people with these expensive vehicles who are to a person self-absorbed, right-wing and don't care about anything but themselves and that perhaps the poor driving has to do with being an ass. YOU took offense because you drive one of these cars as did a few others, but most, even those w/BMWs took this for what it was and agreed or disagreed, joked about it and/or brought up their personal experiences with car choices and bad drivers. Only YOU felt the need to continue to personally attack me, call me racist, etc.

There IS something wrong with you and I think you more than proved MY point on this thread. It's not about the over-priced penis-extension, but the ATTITUDE that some people exhibit.

At any rate...done with psycho beemer boy. Good luck rotting in your own pissed off little world. :wtf:

There are certain makes and models of cars that I've learned to watch a little more closely, and give a little extra room-- because they actually do seem to have a higher percentage of oblivious assholes behind the wheel.

I look out for certain luxury cars the same way I look out for cars that are popular with teenagers. You can make an educated guess.

While I was driving it, I was an asshole. When I decided to stop being an asshole I could no longer stomach that car, so I traded it in on a diesel Jetta. I'm now a much safer driver.

Not all BMW drivers are assholes, but it's the sort of car that appeals strongly to the image-conscious and the performance-obsessed. They tend to be assholes.

They are in the minority around here, however. Of course, most people around here are rethuglicans, so being an asshole is part of their genetic make-up. I will never forget the one I saw the week I got laid off. Her BMW had a license plate frame on it that said "Poverty is Owning a Horse". The poor thing! Because she had the misfortune of owning a horsie, she could only afford the $35-50 K for the 3 Series, instead of a 5, 6 or 7 Series BMW. My heart bleeds for her.

28. You don't have to be "rich" to buy a BMW.
The 3 Series (brand new) starts around $33k, or roughly the price of a well-optioned Nissan Maxima.

I think it may be easier to *notice* a poor driver when they're driving a marque auto. My observations are somewhat contrary to what you've said. Usually, if I see someone driving like an idiot in one of the aforementioned brands, it's usually the entry level cars. The 3 Series, the Audi A4 and the C Series Benz. I think some of them are young and wanted to buy a badge with European exclusivity. Which is fine, so long as they don't act like nouveaux riches little douchebags. Rarely will you see one of the "adult" cars of those brands driving like that, I think.

I've never seen anyone in a Porsche drive without courtesy. Except for the Boxster, which isn't a Porsche IMO. I've seen them drive very fast, but not with their head up their ass.

47. I think $33K is a lot of money, but I know what you mean.
For that money you could get another car really laid out, but that's not their point, is it? A lot of 7 series out here and now I'm seeing the new SUV, too.

Again, since so many are missing the point. I don't think ALL BMW drivers are bad, but my experience with many of them has been. However, the point is I'm questioning if having a very expensive car and poor driving habits is a sign of how you lead your life ie is it a sign of a conservative? Of course other people are bad drivers and I certainly stay clear of the beater driving badly because you know that guy doesn't care. LOL

FYI - Hubby has a 944 Turbo and yes, he's an arse (Sorry "super" person) when he drives it. He hardly gets a chance anymore and I've tried to tone him down some since we have 2 small kids. See? Just because you think someone drives like an arse doesn't mean you "hate".

People here are funny.

I've often wondered if Mercedes drivers have some sort of special exemption from stopping at stop signs. They just roll up to the stop sign, make that right turn right in front of you, with out stopping of course, all the while they're staring at you. Then here's the funny part, they have the gall to looked at you *shocked* because you didn't yield to them.

43. It's correct that many self involved persons buy BMWs.
Edited on Thu Apr-30-09 02:41 PM by TexasObserver
And the evidence of that self involvement manifests itself in many ways, including their driving habits. For many in life, getting a BMW - any BMW - is some kind of validation of their having arrived at a point which they believe is significant. It's a car that many who long to be considered successful buy and drive.

It's a well made car, and performs well, of course, but that's not the main reason many buy it.

Beemer drivers and Mercedes drivers make up the majority of dickwads I encounter on the road. they just seem to have that "I'm better than you" attitude. Followed closely by Volks "Drivers Wanted" Wagon.

A car forum I hang out on is frequently overrun with german car aficionados who firmly believe that their vehicles are the absolute pinnacle of design and engineering and if Americans could only get their hands on the much superior "euro" lubricants...etc, etc, etc.

Never get that crap from the owners of any other nationality; most people will simply say, "yeah, I like my Toyota because..."

gold colored sedans. Almost guaranteed to be driven by a self-righteous older person who will insist on driving in the far left lane, doing far below the speed limit. Just for everyone else's own good, you see.

And anyone on the phone. They inevitably drive erratically - very fast when they finally hang up, suddenly slow when they're focused on the phone call and not the road. They're not supposed to be driving while holding the stupid phone to their ear, but that stops no one, apparently.

89. Yeah, honestly, I don't care so much how fast you're going there -
but you'd better be passing the cars to your right, or you need to join them.

Unfortunately too much of the highway on my commute was designed by idiots and has many left exits. So you get all the pokey pants drivers getting into the left lane early - just in case. And doing 50 mph. Instant traffic jam.

Traffic during commutes here actually moves at 80 mph in the left lane. So be it. Drive that, or get over and out of the way!

I'm told many, many years ago, that CT cops were far more likely to pull people over for traveling in the left lane than they were for speeding. Probably kept traffic moving much better, and resulted in fewer accidents, I'd guess.

regardless of what you drive. You're too thick to figure out what's being discussed here and think it's all about you. :eyes: Peace out.

How many posts have that BS joke now?

I quote you... "That's IT! ENTITLED!" some humor you've got there.

It's not about me, it's about projecting your assholery onto others.

92. While we are bashing German rides, WTF is a "kompressor"?
Who thought it was a good idea to name the car after a part? Are we going to see the Ford Differential? Can I fit a sheet of plywood in the back of that Toyota Torque Converter?

99. It's the same as having a "Turbo" or "Supercharged" badge.
Tells the world that your car has one.

(the "Kompressor" on Benz means supercharged)

SHO was bad enough, but then they tried SVO -- Special Vehicle Operations. Are they trying to make me think Ford has some kind of super-secret skunk works?

My Aerostar is an "XLT" which as near as I figure means "Excellent". Remember we are talking about the car company, not exactly renowned for the reliability of its products, which gave a car a name that rhymes with "expire."

BTW Anyone know what the hell "HHR" as in Chevy HHR stands for?

101. Kompressor is German for 'supercharger'.
See the 1930's Mercedes-Benz 500K and 540K (for 'Kompressor'), for instance.

what's the difference between a porcupine and a BMW?

Porcupines have pricks on the outside.

I agree with you. I've noticed that the more expensive the car is, the bigger an asshole the driver is (This also applies to Lexus, Mercedes, etc)

It has nothing to do with being rich.

Lexus and Mercedes owners are more likely to be snobs, but BMW owners tend to be arseholes.

I'll take a snob over an arsehole.

121. The thing about the whole Mercedes/BMW thing is that SO many people have them...
...that they all start to blend together and be completely unnoticeable/amorphous - like that commercial where the school kids cannot find their parents because they all have the exact same car. I imagine that at least for some, they buy these cars because they like the "image" it projects, which ends up inevitably being "I don't stand out at all, I'm exactly like everyone else, following a trend."

These cars do not reflect wealth either. MANY are leases, and anyone with a job and proof of some income can overextend themselves with debt to afford something they think will make them "fit in." I have friends who make half what I do, who lease expensive cars to look "wealthy" but they can barely afford to eat otherwise. I put away money every month, and my car is paid for. It's a nice enough car, but not a trend mobile, and I don't give half a shit if I look cool in it or not. It runs.

I see assholes in all manner of automobiles, but I tend not to really notice the BMW/Mercedes crowd because they make up about 80% of traffic, and look like a parade of identical little ants creeping down the roadways.

I drive allot, and in my observation I see idiot drivers of any kind of vehicle, doesn't matter if its an SUV/truck, sports car or a high priced luxury ride. More often than not its a teenager driving like a jackass or some woman with a cell phone glued to her ear.

137. Its a given honestly
Their was an article showing that the most ticketed vehicle was the Hummer H2, the Scion TC is right up their in the list and that car is bought by allot of younger drivers. The least ticketed vehicles I remember from that same article is the Chevy Tahoe, Corvette, and probably the Ford F series trucks. Theirs were also some pretty high priced cars in their too as the least ticketed.

At 22 years old, I have a truck and a high powered sports car. Never had a ticket or accident in the last 4 years of driving, plus 2 with a learners permit if you count that... I have my spirited driving moments in the car but I only do that stuff on rare occasions and with no traffic around.

Well, I just moved into an affluent area (houses can go for a couple of million $$$$), but I have never seen a Jaguar, Porsche, or many BMWs. Most are run-of-the-mill SUVs and such.

Why? New money vs. old. You probably live in an area where people are noveau riche and very tacky. Tacky people do tacky things.
