Microsoft preps Windows 7 release (BBC)
By Darren Waters
Technology editor, BBC News website

A release candidate of Windows 7, the next major release of the world's most popular operating system, goes public in trial form in the next week.

Microsoft is hoping it can avoid the negative press that surrounded the launch of Vista, the last major Windows release, almost three years ago.

Windows 7 has been designed to be compatible with Vista so users do not have to invest in new hardware.

A commercial release of Windows 7 is expected in the next nine months.

A test version of Windows 7 will be available to developers from Thursday, while the public can try it out from 5 May.

Well ... it's the world's most widely used OS. "Most popular"? Not among the people I know.

3. I'v been using the Windows 7 Beta for a good while on my laptop
The only problems it gives me once in a while is trying to find driver updates. Otherwise its been extremely stable, comparable speeds and responsiveness to XP and much more pleasing to use than Vista. Not that Vista is crap IMO, it runs real good on my gaming rig. I just really like how the windows can be moved around, and you can add icons to the bottom task bar. So far I give a big two thumbs up for Windows 7!

4. Oh, how are they going to torture us this time?
Is this in any way related to the spread of the flu?

No, I guess it's not that benign. ;-)
