Very sad news: Steny Hoyer's beloved dog Charlotte has died

Mourning: Steny Hoyer, who last week had to put his popular and loyal companion, 15-year-old English springer spaniel Charlotte, to sleep after old-age problems caught up with her. Roll Call reported yesterday the House majority leader skipped the Radio & Television Correspondents' Association dinner last week because of his pooch's passing

From what I recall, Charlotte was originally his wife's dog, and has been a cherished companion to him since her death in 1997.

6. It Is Not That I Do Not Have Empathy; But Really?!?

Of all the things to bring up, the passing of a person's pet does seem to indicate a 'slow news' day.

7. There are no slow news days anymore
There are, however, DUers who love their animals lots and lots and lots. And also lots. Sympathy for someone whose pet has passed is a common, and a wonderful, part of this place.

But yeah, there are no slow news days anymore.

8. That's where you and I differ
I don't have empathy for stuff like this at all. Or very little. Somebody's dog died. That's too bad, I guess, but I feel it not at all when it is some media figure who I don't even know on a personal level, much less the dog. Really, indeed.

Is it sad when somebody's dog dies? Yes. Sad for them. But I don't feel sad at all. I couldn't care less, in fact. I know, I know...Ask not for whom the doggy bell tolls...:-)

You don't give a fuck. As someone with a dog who's 19 years old (and in miraculously good shape), I relate to how Hoyer must feel. It'll be really tough for me when it's time to say goodbye to Tucker.

It won't be tough for me, however, to say goodbye to your dog, since I don't know you or your dog (I suspect Tucker is a lovable and wonderful pet).

I couldn't give a fuck less if you threw a beach party on hearing of my death.

In fact, since I am half-Irish, I would prefer if people threw a party and got good and drunk and had fun and danced and fucked upon hearing of my death. It's my actual preference. So, thank you. The bigger the party the better! Invite everybody, and get some decent beer fer chrissakes.

Edited on Tue Apr-03-07 09:30 AM by alcibiades_mystery
You start with party, then you move to torture? Sounds a bit kooky to me, like your initial line of argument failed, so now you're moving on to something else. Ah well. Your initial premise was that I'd already be dead. Now I'm not dead? Keep your own story straight, please. It's more fun that way.

I don't believe in Satan, so I do encourage you to invite him, but I hear postage is expensive. Try evite.

Actually, your last post made me laught a little - LOL! On a lighter note, since you are Irish, come St. Patty's Day, buy me some beer eh? Damn, I need some beer now. Get me a six pack eh? Make that two - one for each of us. We could use some.

Bush's response - haha, you deserve it Hoyer. My response: Go Cheney yourself, Mr. President.

42. That's sweet
Let's review:

1) I am the egotistical fucktard and immoral asshole who's not particularly moved by the fact that some guy I don't know lost his 15 year old dog.

2) You are the morally upright, righteous, caring one who

a) Wishes for people's deaths on public message boards
b) Hopes to throw an event in which Satan tortures my daughter
c) Sides with criminal thugs who beat and stab people on subways

Is it always this easy to argue with you, or do you just have some weirdo mental block when it comes to dogs?

I don't care what other people think, if you have had an animal companion for 15+ years you feel the passing the same as if they were human. It hurts. And it continues to hurt. I feel sorry for him.

51. Ah now I see where your anger about pets comes from
There was a thirty year old cocker spaniel on the train the day that you were mugged.

Dog just sat there - didn't come to your defense or run off to find "Gramps" and bring help.

But if that had happened would you like animals maybe a little?

Apparently, this is common. I suspect it's more common when small brands like this get bought up by large corporations, as in this case.

44. My 12 year old cat Smokey died last October
I had to put him down as he was in really bad shape. He had spinal problems, couldn't use the litter box and was slowly losing grip on reality. The vets really couldn't make a diagnosis and tell me why he got sick so fast. His foot hurt one day and then it spread up his other leg and to his back. He became paralyzed and then he became disoriented. He just sat in a corner in the kitchen and meowed at me. Sometimes all night long. They were like cries and it was so painful to watch him deteriorate. He was my best buddy for 10 years. I met him when I was 21 when met my husband in college. He fast became my baby and it tore me up to put him down. He was the first pet that was mine and not my parents'. I have two daughters now, ages 1 and 2, but Smokey was my first baby and no one should knock losing someone's pet. For many people, especially the elderly and sick, pets are their only companions. Smu was gentle to my daughters and sweet and lovable. I miss you Smu!

47. Last October our 13 year old beagle died
Last summer we discovered she had an array of health problems - heart murmur, enlarged heart, coughing, enlarged liver. We kept her comfortable, and even up until the day she died, she knew her routines. It is sad and emotional to lose a family pet.

As I mentioned above, my dog is 19. We got him when my son was 1. She's a huge part of our lives. Why she's still active and in good shape is a total mystery, not just to me, but to our Vet.

46. How sad.
When my husband died, we had a dog and he absolutely loved that dog and she adored him. She curled up with him and stayed with him during his last illness. She was truly a boon companion and a great friend who brought him a lot of comfort and joy. When this beloved pet passed away 2.5 years ago, it was a very, very sad event. She was 13 years old and had out lasted her beloved master, my late husband, for 11 years. I truly understand how Mr. Hoyer feels ~~ it was like losing a part of someone I loved and a very solid link with the love of my life in addition to the loss of a very beloved pet.

Condolences, Mr. Hoyer ~~ I understand what a hard loss this is.

Edited on Tue Apr-03-07 10:30 AM by Dinger
For anyone who has lost a pet, especially one whose life was intertwined with a loved one who has passed away, it is devastating to say the least. I have been in Steny's shoes, and I know exactly what it is like. It took a long time to heal, but we eventually got another dog. We couldn't let the loss of our beloved Shakey keep us from sharing our home and our love with another dog. We welcomed Zippy into our lives two years ago today.

Zippy as a puppy:
