School forces student to change out of kilt
WEST HAVEN, Utah - The principal of a Utah middle school has been asked to apologize for forcing a kilt-wearing student to change his clothes.

Weber School District spokesman Nate Taggart says Craig Jessop has been asked to extend an apology to 14-year-old student Gavin McFarland of Hooper after the school official's comments Wednesday.

Gavin says he wore the kilt twice in the past two weeks to Rocky Mountain Junior High as a prop for an art project. Jessop told the boy that the outfit could be misconstrued as cross-dressing.

Taggart says the district recognizes the kilt as an expression of the boy's Scottish heritage and that the kilt was not inappropriate.

1. Consider the source:
This is UTAH.
Mr. Jessop probably considers girls in pants to be "cross dressing"

2. Shades of the Bush Era when a T-shirt could get you expelled
Edited on Mon May-18-09 08:34 AM by lunatica
I've never heard of the kilt being perceived as cross dressing. Well, at least up to now. I thought everyone on the planet knows what a kilt is. Just like everyone on the planet knows what a cowboy hat is. Or a Mexican sombrero, or Dutch clogs. But then maybe they're all frowned on in Utah schools.

4. Crossdresssing, no. Disruptive, yes.
Any kid who wore any costume 14 days in a row probably would be sent home to change but to claim it was cross-dressing was inappropriate.

That is my grandmotherly opinion and I am sticking to it.

8. I object to it being called a 'costume'
As someone of Scottish heritage(you couldn't tell based on my last name taken from my father's side) it is not a custume. It is not the same as someone wearing a spandex outfit with a cape and a mask. It is clothing and should be allowed to be worn by anyone.

I attended one of the top rated schools in the nation and we always referred to them as costumes. Until today I had no idea that was not universal usage.

Don't get me started on scraper, scratcher, or spatula, and waterfountain or bubbler.

12. National Costume, In Minnesota it is common usage
Edited on Mon May-18-09 12:34 PM by kickysnana
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_costume

National costume, (also: national dress, regional costume, folk dress or traditional garment), expresses an identity through costume which usually relates to a geographic area or a period of time in history, but can also indicate social, marital and/or religious status. Such costumes often come in two forms: one for everyday occasions, the other for festivals and formal wear.

In United States usage the term "costume" is used in the sense of "fanciful dress", and so "national dress" is used to avoid this connotation.

9. every Jessop in that state scares the shit out of me
with the exception of Flora, who is like a Harriet Tubman to these little girls being raped by their dad and uncles in Joe Smith's name.

They farm a lot there too and I would always have to keep an eye out that i never bought any of their shit when i lived in Phoenix.
