Palin defends Miss Calif. from ‘malicious’ attacks
By The Associated Press
05.18.2009 2:47pm EDT

(Anchorage, Alaska) Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is defending Miss California USA Carrie Prejean.

The former vice presidential candidate says in a statement, “The liberal onslaught of malicious attacks against Carrie Prejean for expressing her opinion is despicable.”

Prejean created a stir at last month’s Miss USA pageant when she said marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

Questions about her work with gay marriage opponents and nearly nude photos taken of her when she was a teenager had put her title in jeopardy, but pageant owner Donald Trump decided to let Prejean keep her state crown.

Palin says she respects Prejean for staying true to her beliefs and can relate to her “as a liberal target myself.”

Palin was a runner-up in the 1984 Miss Alaska contest.

4. Never thought I'd say this, but I agree with Palin (shudder).
She was asked a question and she answered it. First, I don't think that was the forum for that question to even be asked, and second, we can't pick and choose what we consider free speech anymore than the opposition can. What I despise about Prejean is that she broke the rules of the pageantry and Trump let her get away with it because she's pretty. Her crown should have been taken away for that but then she continued to lie saying it was windy, it was the photographer's fault, and on and on. For that, she's disgusting.

7. I agree, she's entitled to her opinion.
And so are the 'judges'. That's why they are called 'judges'. They judge you. She got judged. It's not an objective contest, otherwise they wouldn't ask them questions, and they wouldn't have the biggst capitalist pig running the thing. I'd have to say that if there is such a think as a Miss American "purest" out there, they had to have jumped ship when Donald was handed the reigns. I'd quit watching the NFL is Donald ran it.

25. This statement says it all!
"...having a freedom of speech does not mean that you are free to give your opinion without being criticized for holding it.

The whole thing is being blown out of proportion because it is fodder for the pols....

15. What? No one is trouncing her freedom of speech.
Edited on Mon May-18-09 02:42 PM by varkam
She can say whatever the hell she wants to. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution only applies to the government, though - not private actors. If the beauty pageant wants to shut her up or boot her out of the competition, they are will within their rights to do so (seeing as how they are a private organization).

Additionally, having a freedom of speech does not mean that you are free to give your opinion without being criticized for holding it. Her "opinion" is bigoted and backwards and has the unmistakable stench of hypocrisy about it, and I feel that I should be able to express my own free speech rights in asserting as much.

30. TMZ noted that Miss Prejean carries a remarkable
resemblance to his second wife, Marla Maples.

I'll bet the current wife's getting long in the tooth. Time to trade her in on a new model, huh?

8. Yep. Every time a repuke is criticized, it's a 'malicious attack'.
Every time they malign a Democrat, calling them everything from a terrorist supporter to anti-American, that's 'constructive criticism'.

They're just two-year-olds. All of them. (Apologies to two-year-olds).

9. The "Religious Right" never understands the other half of the equation:
yes, they have the right to spout their views.

What they want to deny is our right to denounce their views as bullshit (when appropriate).

17. And we think
they should follow the rules they agreed to, instead of whining that we're being MEAN to point out that they're not.

You don't think a lesbian would have been deprived of her crown in a New York minute.

A lesbian beauty queen...now wouldn't that be super.

Include Military contracts. Come to think of it sworn statements aren't much good either. All of those things just apply to lesser mortals.

12. How did Miss CA suffer from these "vicious attacks"?
I don't get it. She broke the pageant rules, she lied to the pageant organizers, she was allowed to keep her title in spite of lying.

Seems to me the "vicious attacks" worked out pretty well for her.

Of course everything comes with a price. Now she has to do the horizontal hokey pokey with a guy with a dead varmint on his head,

Don't you just love it when Republicans defend racists and bigots by using the 'expressing her opinion' argument.

I wonder if she would defend the KKK, or David Duke, that way.

36. She wasn't attacked for expressing her views. She was attacked for the stupidity of her views.
A subtle but significant difference. It's like if one believed the value of pi wasn't 3.14159 . . . but was 3.0 even because it says so in the Bible. (It actually does say that in the Bible.) It is one's right to believe it and to express that belief. But it is also the right of others to express their belief that one thereby proved oneself to be a stupid idiot.

I bet if you asked Sarah Palin the value of pi, she'd answer, "Apple or cherry?"
