4. I read the book in 1984
you couldn't miss it at the checkout counters. Later the movies 'animal farm' and '1984' came out they were both mind openers.

13. "1984"
Was a movie originally made in Hollywood @1951 with Edmund O'Brien as Wilson. It was a pretty good movie of the book despite the problems of censorship at that time. The movie with Richard Burton and John Hurt came out in the 80's but I think it was made in England since our censorship rules were still in place during the Reagan years. Yeah think of that Reagan and "1984"!

14. That movie was made in England around '84
but I don't see why it couldn't have been made here?

9. used books on Amazon can be quite reasonable
plus the used book sellers there are all limited to the same shipping & handling fee, usually lower than what people on eBay decide to charge

10. Also "The Quiet American"
I love "1894" Read the book, too.

Another film worth watching is "The Quiet American."
It's based on a book that the British journalist Graham Greene wrote in 1955, long before many Americans were paying much attention to Vietnam. It shows the complicity of the CIA in causing dissention there.

Two films have been made about the book.

The first one came out in 1958 and was so distorted by Hollywood manipulation to change the message that Greene rejected it.

The second came out in 2001 and was actually shelved for a couple of years to fit the political climate. Michael Caine stars in it and does a great job.

http://www.counterpunch.org/landau1224.html
So prophetic and applicable to today:
Quote from Landau: 2002
Those men, like Greene's Alden Pyle, get their espirt d'corps from the intellectuals whom we read in the newspaper and magazine columns, like the octogenarian William Safire and the know-it-all- but-doesn't-like-to-fight-personally Thomas Friedman of the New York Times. These chicken hawks eschew the lesson that Graham taught fifty years ago. The failure in Vietnam taught them nothing about the impossibility of exporting our order to Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, North Korea or, well, you pick it. These missionary writers do not, of course, do the fighting. They also glide over some of the issues that make the constant repetition of the word democracy ring hollow. A country where the majority doesn't vote? A country where the majority of federal offices are uncontested? We want to spread this abroad? What we don't want to spread at home or abroad, however, is the distinguishing fact that makes us special: immense wealth.

12. Orwell Rolls In His Grave
Docu asks, "Could a media system, controlled by a few global corporations with the ability to overwhelm all competing voices, be able to turn lies into truth?..."
