I read a post here on DU tonight that Palin has a few days left before she will be overdue in paying the Alaska government for travel for her kids.
There was a big brouhaha about the cost of the president taking his wife to New York for a date night. He paid their way; the right wing wackadoodles screamed about it.
When a government person travels on the company dime - so to speak - for personal business or has their family travel for non-official reasons, it is customary for them to reimburse their respective jurisdiction the cost of comparable commercial travel.
They are not expected to pay the total cost of the trip. The tens or scores or hundreds of camp followers, court jesters, knights in armour, ladies in waiting, and the usual retinue of guys-in-dark-suits are there because that is the jurisdiction's official policy. I really don't think the president and the missus wanted a whole troupe of thuglike bodyguards watching them chew in a Greenwich Village hot spot. But that's the policy. And the thuglike guys have to get there somehow. And so does the prescribed mode of ground transport. And the prescribed fleet escort vehicles. And the gang of local constabulary.
All there cuz that's the policy.
So the only reason to bitch is when they don't pay up the value of the commercial travel.
Our president has already done that.
Plain has, thus far, either cheaped out or is playing grifter.
I vote for "grifter".
