Colleagues say Tiller knew something was coming
Colleagues say Tiller knew something was coming

By Laura Bauer and Judy L. Thomas | Kansas City Star

Two weeks before Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller was gunned down in his church, he called colleague Susan Hill in North Carolina.

Tiller wanted her to send pictures of activists who'd recently been threatening Hill and her staff. He said he was seeing new anti-abortion protesters outside his clinic and wondered if they were traveling around.

"I said, 'I don't know, George. I think there's something coming.'," recalled Hill, who operates clinics in four states. "He said, 'I do, too.'

“We knew it. You smell it. Strange things were happening in our Mississippi clinic and in North Carolina. Strange people were coming around. And he admitted that for the first time, he really believed that something was going to go down.”

In the days since Tiller's death, abortion rights activists across the country say they sensed an uptick in incidents and threats before the shooting. That included more people at protests, more clinic vandalism and more protesters singling out certain clinic employees or physicians with threats.

1. That doesn't sound like a "lone gunman" scenario at all.
And, yes, impressions matter. I believe that hunches like that are the subconscious's way of pointing out something we don't notice consciously.

2. Of course it doesn't. It's a whole culture. And FBI fucked up bigtime
on the Tiller stalker. But I guess to be surprised, you'd have to remember the last time FBI managed to interdict a threat. I sure don't.

4. No... lately they've been manufacturing them instead.
Maybe they need to REALLY recruit a mathematician to do their crime detection for them since they've gotten so freaking bad at it.

3. Definitely
The wingers are really getting whacked out about DEM President who looks different, has a different name, expects people to engage in making the nation better. They are looking for ways to express the unexplored parts of their brains and they are ratcheting up.

In other words, they are pissed, scared and don't know how to deal with reality constructively.

And those at risk of their exercises of madness probably are noticing subtle variances in local behaviors. The mind registers more than we are aware of.

I have been a bit on edge cuz it has been VERY quiet where I am, and that is very odd.

5. It's time for the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to take a hard look...
...at all the right wing domestic terrorists.

6. hope for better security
as I stated in another post, my daughter's boyfriend is a U.S. Marshall from NC and he traveled to Kansas a couple of days ago and will be there for 1 more week protecting another Doctor (female, no names).
I learned there are Marshalls currently at homes and workplaces 24 hours a day...

7. That's a good start, but one week isn't long for these terrorists
to lay low. I think we need to get really tough with these people. The guy who killed Tiller would be a great place to start.

And thank your daughter's boyfriend for providing security-I'm glad something is being done.

9. There should be special circumstances
for anyone involved in vandalizing clinics - serious criminal charges that don't apply to the average vandal. Like when when someone kills a cop and the murder has more serious weight.

11. In theory, there is: the FACE Act.
Surprise, surprise, the FACE Act went completely unenforced during the Bush years, and it's taking time to get the feds to do their jobs correctly...

13. Yes, I've read about the FACE Act
and how often it was utilized during the Clinton administration to decrease the incidence of violence. I know that during Bush admin it was disregarded almost completely. But I don't remember the details well enough. It didn't seem to address vandalism so much as the physical (by people) and emotional (intimidation, threat, shame) act of blocking women from clinics.

It should be routine on all levels whenever a clinic is targeted and when any crime interferes with the services being provided. It needs to be strong and without legal outs.

I guess I should read a little more about it. Perhaps it can do what is needed, provided the justice system is willing.

12. Does this count as a ticking time-bomb situation?
that guy they arrested might know something about other attacks his cell has planned. Has anyone called for waterboarding?
