Hillary's New Crusade: Feminist Hero, The Daily Beast

Michele Goldberg

"A year ago this week, Hillary Clinton ended her presidential campaign—to the relief of many. But even her critics must admit that as secretary of State, she’s been a feminist hero to behold.
One year ago today, Hillary Clinton ended her presidential campaign, much to the relief of millions of ardent Barack Obama supporters like me. Throughout the primaries, I had been irritated and then outraged by those who argued feminism obliged women to back her. The possibility that our first female president would be a former first lady promising to continue her husband’s legacy struck me as profoundly dispiriting. During the campaign, her hardball tactics horrified me. So when she made her rousing and gracious speech in the National Building Museum, conceding defeat but celebrating "18 million cracks" in "that highest, hardest glass ceiling," I was too furious to really hear her.

Listening to it now, though, I can’t help but tear up. I’m still glad I supported Obama, who I think is proving to be a better, defter president than Clinton would have been. Nevertheless, I was wrong to mistake her political ruthlessness for a lack of principle. Just as Clinton proved her skeptics wrong upon entering the Senate in 2001 with hard and diligent work, she is now quietly remaking the State Department. That’s especially true when it comes to women’s rights. As secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has been the feminist hero of this administration."

1. Michele Goldberg - a waste of skin.
I have no interest in her views on anything. She is an arrogant republican elitist.

2. Thanks for posting this article
I found it informative and thought-provoking. We have so far to go, but Hillary will go down in History as the most important female figure in the 21st Century. It's amazing how we take two steps backward for every step forward.

11. it will be Michelle, not Hillary
please consider what has been contributed by Michelle in her short time - family values (the Real ones), open and honest talk many can relate to, her great work at building self esteen for girls and women, her daring talk about what a working mom must struggle with. Hillary, she's on record for not disliking cluster bombs and what it does to families somewhere out there

4. no feminist hero jokes about her cheating husband while still with him
and uses that as a sympathy card while she laughs it off. meanwhile Monika has been reviled and a hate fat (?)joke forever while good ole Billy just carries on with his nudge nudge wink wink jokes about it all.

5. Oh good grief. Somehow I doubt Hillary has ever joked about Bill's cheating.

Revolting.

12. yes, i think its maybe not revolting, but uncomfortable..,..
for a 'feminist' to use a devastating personal experience like that (and its worse than a death in a family in many ways) and make light of it for political gain - which didn't work btw.

I do not, however, refer to Hillary. But the sudden whiff of open sewer coming from your "comment."

13. Sorry, but I don't get it.
What exactly has her brief stay as Secretary of State done that she had not done before?

And Clinton was not the first female Secretary of State, or even the second.

I won't argue against her "hero" status, because that's an individual thing. I just don't get the premise.
