He was a psychologist and most health insurance companies no longer cover mental health. Those that do make it virtually impossible for physicians to get paid, plus there was his ever rising malpractice insurance and the insurance costs for his staff. So yes, insurance companies caused him to sell his practice.
2. Mental illness is tough situation. NY recently passed a law requiring the copay
for mental health to be the same as for a specialist. Which was great when i had independent health, because it was $10. Now that I have Cigna, I gave the mental health clinic my husbands pay stubs and other info and somehow they think i can afford to pay $50 a visit. I couldn't hardly swing $20 when it was that before the new law made it have to be the same. So I haven't gone... and i guess I won't be going. And that sucks because I really need it. Especially now when I am pregnant and so not taking my antidepressants. It makes a person feel very frustrated and more depressed on top of everything else.
3. I don't know any physician who quit over insurance
and I don't know any who I would identify as corrupted by drug companies either.
I've known physicians who never turn anyone away regardless of income, I've known physicians who leave the billing to the accounting office and pretend they don't know they're turning people away who have no money. They're both giving real human beings medical care.
