Summit Overview
The Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education is honoured to host His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Vancouver, September 26-29, 2009 for the Vancouver Peace Summit: Nobel Laureates in Dialogue.

Joining the Dalai Lama will be Nobel Laureates: Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Jody Williams, Mairead McGuire and Betty Williams, as well as a number of respected international leaders from the realms of education, the arts, business, politics and social transformation.

The Summit will be built on dialogues held at the Chan Center for the Performing Arts and the Orpheum Theatre. The focus of these dialogues will include the themes of peace, education and women and peace-building.

A key component of the Summit is Connecting for Change, a three-day invitation-only dialogue for corporate and social leaders and philanthropists that will focus on questions related to universal themes of compassion, community, and peace.

The Vancouver Peace Summit will help to address a broad range of social, cultural and economic challenges. It will strengthen the path of peace through six key themes, detailed below.

Connecting for Change: Inspired Leadership for Transformative Action
Today's most important challenges cannot be met by working within the confines of traditional sectors. Inspirational, corporate, social and philanthropic innovators will share their experiences transforming themselves, their organizations and communities. His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be a guest at a special session of this invitation-only dialogue intended to inspire cross-sector connections and collaborations.

World Peace through Personal Peace
Personal peace shapes what people believe and how they behave. It is vital to understanding our world and can be used to improve the lot of humankind. An intimate and personal discussion with the Dalai Lama and other respected leaders from across the globe who have inspired societal change through their personal endeavors will explore how inner transformation can help us work towards building a peaceful world.

Nobel Laureates in Dialogue: Connecting for Peace
Leadership in the peaceful resolution of conflict requires both an understanding of differences and an appreciation of our common humanity. It combines a sense of responsibility for others with faith in the power of individuals to shape institutions and create positive change. It also requires working with others to share efforts, create new possibilities, and bridge differences. In this inspiring dialogue, five Nobel Peace Laureates – including the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Jody Williams, Mairead Maguire, and Betty Williams – will discuss their own motivations, their experiences of connecting for change, and their perspectives on our human responsibilities at the present time.

Women & Peace-Building: A Conversation with the Dalai Lama & Friends
Women play a vital but often unrecognized role in advancing peace. The summit will bring together leaders from across the spectrum of education, arts, politics, business, philanthropy, and community activism, to explore and share the many ways that women are creating a more compassionate and peaceful world - in their families, communities and in the world.

Me to We Youth Day
In partnership with Free the Children, the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education will present Me to We Day Vancouver – a special summit program engaging young people to reach out to others and transform their communities for the better.

Educating the Heart
The summit session will address social-emotional learning (SEL), heart-mind education and creativity in education. These approaches develop concentration and creativity, deepen insight, and cultivate an awareness and understanding among students. Distinguished authors, researchers and teachers will share the latest research and findings with summit attendees and participants.

5. I saw him last year

He held a week long session at one of our Univerity arenas. I went for one of the days.

Good year last year, I saw the Dali Lama, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Bruce Springsteen.

Only person I wish I could have seen was Al Gore. That would have made the year complete.

6. Peace needs to be worked at with the same zeal as war is pursued

Like they say, peace is not the absence of war just like war is not the absence of peace. Peace must be a goal in which the instruments of peace are cultivated and manufactured with jobs created with economic growth being part of it. Peace must be a selling point and an end in itself. Peace can have a payoff worth pursuing if it becomes as large an industry as the making of weapons of war.

I believe it can be done. But then, I'm a Progressive.
