There is no room for compromise on human rights.

And if the last 8 years didn't teach you that - nothing ever will.

6. my blood pressure goes through the roof
every time somebody tells me I need to compromise on issues such as human rights, torture and war.

some would have us compromise our very humanity for political expediency.
That is simply criminal, IMHO.

12. How many people has hate killed in the last few weeks?
And to deny people their human rights just feeds that hate.

The haters win when government sides against human rights.

2. The president is on the wrong side of this one. And, that's a shame.
There is no room to compromise on human rights. The only thing that ever results in is the loss of human rights.

5. Let's see..what was it that Benjamin Franklin said? Oh..yes...
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither.

People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.

If we restrict liberty to attain security we will lose them both.

Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.
He who gives up freedom for safety deserves neither.

Those who would trade in their freedom for their protection deserve neither.

Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security.

9. Did he say anything regarding those who sacrifice liberty for mere cynical political calculation?
Because I don't think safety even enters into this one.

18. John Adams had a few things to say about the fight for liberty (some call it a pony)
"Be not intimidated... nor suffer yourselves to be wheedled out of your liberties by any pretense of politeness, delicacy, or decency. These, as they are often used, are but three different names for hypocrisy, chicanery and cowardice."

"Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness of the people; and not for profit, honor, or private interest of any one man, family, or class of men; therefore, the people alone have an incontestable, unalienable, and indefeasible right to institute government; and to reform, alter, or totally change the same, when their protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness require it."

I consider this an answer to to the temptation to sacrifice liberty for "cynical political calculation"

15. As soon as you got the pony some bigot would create a law saying
you weren't fit to own a pony.

And sadly, that's not as silly as it sounds.

Because if you can openly and freely discriminate against people then no absurdity is beyond imagining.

23. Stop whining about your pets and their issues
Obama has so much on his plate. He'll get around to your puny matters sometime during his third term. It's not all about you, you know. He has puppies, nights on the town, TV appearances and other pressing matters to attend to.

27. I'd also like to thank the LGBT community for preserving "scarce government resources."
Because your rights can be measured in dollars and cents and the less rights you have means the more money government saves, I'd like to take the time to say Thank You!!!!

And you thought the government didn't value you?

Were you ever wrong! Government has you valued right down to the penny.

31. Think of the money government would save!

You do know that I'm not the one equating denial of rights with saving money, right? :)

http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/06/12/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry5084948.shtml

"The U.S. Justice Department's brief doesn't address the morality of same-sex marriage. Instead, it makes the narrower legal argument that DOMA "merely permits each state to follow its own policy with respect to marriage" and the law "does not restrict any rights that have been recognized as fundamental." It also says that it saves money by not paying out marriage benefits under federal law, a move that "preserves scarce government resources." "
