Okay, I'll say it--please don't make fun of the Sanford emails.
I'm sure we've all said or written things to people we care about that would sound awkward when read by a stranger. That's certainly the least of Sanford's transgressions, and there's more than enough things to make fun of about the situation without resorting to mocking whatever they did or didn't feel.

87. That's exactly what I posted earlier.

Just because Sanford says it's a woman, why does everyone assume it is?? He's a lying cheater.

OMG, did you hear Stephanie, Jim and Chris this morning. They repeated the same theory! They must read DU! Chris even said "mario"

I thought the email pronoun use was very vague also.

The plot thickens!

75. he gave not one flying shit for anyone else's emotions
so he gets no pass. NONE.

And frankly, I have grave doubts that his syrupy romance novel excerpt filled love letters are the least bit truthful. This is exactly the kind of sappy drivle men slather on women whose pants they want to get in when it's convenient for them... particularly married men who have no intension of leaving their wives or damaging their careers/ambitions. Such selfish turds when caught immediately discover that their "beloved"-on-the-side isn't the love of their life all (gee, exactly what Sanford did).

16. I agree 100%.
Maybe more, because there is so much at stake here. First, the republican party is the party of family values. We need to show respect for their respect for family values. Honoring the governor's dishonorable behavior is a must.

Second, what if the republicans get mad? I think the threads on DU that make jokes about this tragic situation could very well back-fire. The price we will all pay is too much to risk.

Third, laughter in and of itself is dangerous. Our faces could freeze in place, and we would run around looking like the Joker on Batman (movies and cartoons). It would be unrealistic to think that the silent majority would trust a bunch of grass roots Jokers who laugh.

I hope Skinner will suspend the drivers licenses of any DUer who either tells jokes or laughs. A good stiff warning for those who smile may be a good thing, too.

20. I do not have sympathy for this man.

He was carrying on a romantic and apparently steamy love affair while holding himself out to the public as a morally superior Christian man out to protect and promote "family values". He is a fraud and a hypocrite. I am not going to give him any slack because he was actually having an affair with a woman he is in love with rather than the hookers most of his republican colleagues hang around.

He wanted it both ways.

I think he and everything he has written and has said is open to ridicule.

Yep. It sucks. They'll probably hear about this the rest of their lives.

But it was their father's responsibility to conduct his life in such a way that his children wouldn't have to bear the brunt of his mistakes or bad behavior.

He obviously didn't give a rat's ass about them or their emotions. Only his own sleazy pleasure. Why do these assholes go on thinking they can keep these things secret?

http://www.americablog.com/2009/06/two-weeks-ago-mark-sanford-emphatically.html

Mark Sanford is, of course, a right-wing defender of "traditional" marriage. Just two weeks ago, he made it clear that the GOP should not change its views on same-sex marriage. He was on MSNBC's Morning Joe to talk about unifying the GOP.

Joe Scarborough, led with the marriage issue, asking, "Do you think the Republican party should become more libertarian on the issue of gay marriage?" In other words, should the GOP stay out of the issue. Sanford responded, "No, I don't."

If he weren't such a sanctimonious hypocrite
I might agree.

But he is, so I don't.

can't take back. I followed that advice. Sanford deserves all he gets

64. I honor your sentiment
and compassion for anyone is a good thing.

However, this is all due to choices the man has made, and because of his ultimate hypocrisy that effects other's lives, let the chips fall.
Karma's a bitch.

67. I'll laugh and feel good about it!
Yes, I've written plenty of things to lovers and received plenty of things from them I wouldn't want to hear read on the news.

However, I am not a RW politician who's spent much of his career mocking the love of others; most recently made the headlines by trying to make sure the poor people in his state stayed hungry by fighting against the "marxist" money the government WANTED to give them; and wrote these frothy Harlequin paragraphs to a woman who isn't his wife. (Younger, I take it? Yeah, I thought so. What a cliche. It's not just cheesy romance, it's trite and sexist cheesy romance) Those things make the emails mockworthy, not the purple prose, which just makes them human.

"I want to be your tampon, Camilla." Ewww.

We still get to mock the sanctimonious Republican hypocrite.

71. Sure I wrote things like that...when I was 17.
With a wife and four kids, what he SHOULD have felt was the need to keep his dick in his pants and not destroy two families.

72. I agree. We don't need to hear his personal statements.
I had to tune away from KO when he was chortling over Sanford's love missives. It was embarrassing and inappropriate to read them on the air. What the guy did is bad enough without this intrusion. We are supposed to be better than that.

From: Gov. Sanford
To: Maria

????? WTF? Then you talk about holding boobies?

77. State reporter confirmed that they were private emails
From the way that they were presented in the article, I assumed that they were sent from his official government email address. The reporter who did the article was on Rachel Maddow's show last night and she said that the emails were sent from his personal private email address.

The emails were sent to the paper by email from an anonymous tipster last December. The paper requested verification from both the sending email address (tipster) and Maria's email address. They did not receive confirmation from either source so they did not publish the emails.

So the question is, who sent these emails and how did they obtain them? Unless Sanford's email was hacked, the emails were obtained by someone else who had access to his or Maria's email accounts or they were forwarded to someone else and found their way to the news media. The emails represent private correspondence between two individuals. My guess is that a staffer or family member with a reason to be angry at the governor accessed his email, but who knows.

81. Well, his description of her hips and tan lines gave us a pretty good picture
of his sexual attraction to her, I'd say. If anything, it's better cuz we can design our "own" fantasy of what he and she did together...which is probably better than the reality, IMO...

The right-wing hate media sure wouldn't be ignoring those emails if a Democrat was involved, and we shouldn't, either.

They hammered the John Edwards story for weeks, and he wasn't even a sitting elected official at the time.
