Bachmann Warns Of Link Between Census And Japanese Internment
This is one reason why paying attention to politics is as entertaining as watching soaps.

Bachmann Warns Of Link Between Census, Japanese Internment
By Eric Kleefeld - June 25, 2009, 11:00AM

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) is taking her refusal to fully fill out her Census form, which is a crime punishable by a $5,000 fine, to a whole new level: Invoking the memory of the Japanese internment during World War II, and the evil role that the Census played in it!

During an interview this morning on Fox News, Bachmann mostly focused on the danger of her personal information falling into the hands of the dreaded menace ACORN. But at one point, she made a very interesting appeal to history:

"Take this into consideration. If we look at American history, between 1942 and 1947, the data that was collected by the Census Bureau was handed over to the FBI and other organizations at the request of President Roosevelt, and that's how the Japanese were rounded up and put into the internment camps," said Bachmann. "I'm not saying that that's what the Administration is planning to do, but I am saying that private personal information that was given to the Census Bureau in the 1940s was used against Americans to round them up, in a violation of their constitutional rights, and put the Japanese in internment camps."

At this point even Megyn Kelly, who had been gladly dishing out the anti-ACORN talk along with Bachmann, had to take a step back and raise the point that the Japanese internment was a long time ago and we haven't had such abuses since then.

For some context on how this fits into Bachmann's overall worldview, keep in mind that she's previously warned of the threat of "re-education camps" where young people would be indoctrinated into the government's official philosophy.

10. I don't really care if Bachmann and her followers answer all questions on the census form.
They are only harming themselves with their own paranoia, because those questions are intended to elicit information used to allocate public funds.

If they don't want public funds flowing in their direction, that's fine with me. Let those who answer fully receive the benefits of having done so.

Bachmann is either in serious need of mental help or so far beyond ignorant that there is no cure.

17. Thang God for Bachmann
Since GB left the political scene (at least until his trial for war crimes and eventual imprisonment) we've needed a conservative as incredibly stupid and downright batshit crazy as Bachmann to remind us of the true nature of the republican party.

The really scary thought is that there are literally thousands (possibly millions) of our fellow citizens that can listen to this crazy c**ze and think she's making sense! Maybe the birchers were right and fluoridation really is a plot to contaminate our vital essence, 'cause I can't imagine how else so many people can be otherwise functional (get up in the morning and feed themselves, go to work, etc) and yet be so mentally impaired as to think that Bachmann is sane.

18. I know many people from the Minneapolis area
and they all seem like normal, sane, intelligent individuals. How did this woman ever get elected, much less re-elected? Is her district specially gerrymandered to just include the batshit crazy voters?

19. Bachmann does not represent Minneapolis
her district starts on the east side of the northern metro and extends west through some rural areas and some of the nuttiest parts of the state.

Keith Ellison is the Congressman whose district is mainly made up of Minneapolis

22. She represents the huge red pimple on the face of MN
There is a huge concentration of ultra-conservatives in her district (central MN, north of Minneapolis/St. Paul).

And boy oh boy are they batshit crazy up there. My uncle, for example, had an 8-ft tall picture of a fetus painted on his barn bracketed with a "Choose Life" slogan

26. Bachmann does have a good point.
Any information you give the government can and will be used against you. Apparently some will never learn from history. There are no guarantees that census data won't be used again in an unConstitutional manner.

I don't object to counting people, but I do object when the government wants answers to intrusive questions that have nothing to do with determining population. My race, household plumbing, and other issues are of no relevance. Now if those questions are optional, fine. Unfortunately they aren't.

IIRC, Bachmann has said that she will only give a headcount of her household. Which is perfectly fine.
