Jerry Falwell is a complete asshole
He's on CNN playing apologist for candidates like Gingrich and Guiliani, "We don't live in an ideal world." and so on.

"We're not going to elect a sunday school teacher president."

the correspondent replies:

"Actually we once did -- Jimmy Carter."

Falwell: "Yeah, and he was the worst we've had in 40 years."

this moron has no shame.

1. He just demolished...
Every theocratically-tinged argument he's ever made. But he is, at the core of things, a stupid, stupid man.

A friend of mine grew up in the same town as him, knew him. They even both became ministers. My friend left his church and is now an Episcopal priest. Friend says Falwell is merely a silly used car salesman, just a huckster.

2. more than a huckster
He's a first-rate con artist. I know someone who knows him, too. This person was in politics. Falwell tried to shake this person down for 70k. Not peanuts, and that was over 25 years ago.

18. I attended a college 15 mins away from Lynchburg until 1979 and Jerry
(before he became the media monster we all loathe) was known as a local character. The stories I heard were amazing even then.

He had a telethon to raise money for Liberty Baptist College for 24 hours and raised $1 million (big money in those days).

His church had ministers going out as substitute teachers in the public schools. One minister told a bunch of kindergarteners that there was no Santa Claus but they had someone MUCH better: Jesus Christ. The kids had a collective nervous breakdown, and the minister was refused access to the public schools thereafter.

Jerry would send empty buses into neighborhoods on Sunday mornings. The driver or a church member would tell kids playing in the street that there was a $10 bill under one of the seats of the bus. The bus would be filled up, doors closed, and the kids taken to the Thomas Road Baptist Church to be "welcomed" as new members. One kid would be left behind to tell the parents of the (otherwise kidnapped) kids that Jerry's church had come to take them to meet Jesus. The parents didn't care one way or the other. The buses would then come and would not have to bribe the kids to get on board.

A student from Liberty Baptist Church came to our college as part of a music concert series. Beethoven, Bach, etc. on the piano. We were compelled to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance BEFORE the concert (no, not the Christian Pledge of Allegiance).

By the time Jerry started making copy in Time Magazine with Ronald Reagan's candidacy, it just didn't surprise me. He always impressed me with wanting to rule the rest of us more than Reagan, or any elected officials actually.

3. Sun rises in the east....
Same kind of headline. That Falwell is an asshole is a given. Carter was probably the most moral, ethical President this country had in it's relatively short history. I suppose he thinks DimSon ranks highly? :eyes:

5. It is funny how history is constantly been rewritten by the repugs
Carter had to clear all the messes that Nixon and Ford left behind. Once Ford died he was held as a great man, never mind that he was an utterly incompetent moron, who according to Johnson could not fart and breath at the same time. He left Nixon go and put the economy in a tail spin, that Carter actually stopped and he did so w/o breaking the bank.

What Falwell and Co. are saying in "code" is that Carter was a pussy for not turning Iran into a glass parking lot, how Christian of them. How dare them ragheads take down a brutal dictator imposed by the US after we took down their own democratic government!

Carter was also one of the most educated presidents in history, he was a nuclear engineer and he served in the silent service as a submariner. As such, he trashed a shitload of stupid proposals from the industrial/military complex (IMC). The B1A was a shitty bomber that was way too expensive and had no chance of getting anywhere inside the USSR, he canned such programs and the IMC practically ran him out of office. Raygun who was a complete moron, and who was so senile that he though those training films he made during WWII counted as real combat experience, not only reinstated the B1 program... but at an even higher cost. B1s are a POS, and for the most part it was stealth technology which Carter encouraged that has seem far more action that those B1Bs we bought thanks to Raygun.

Ironically Carter has done more to help his fellow men after his presidency, with things like Habitat for Humanity, than this blowhard so called "Christian" Falwell has ever done. If he even believed in his own message he should be ashamed of himself... Falwell and his ilk are nothing more than modern day Pharisees.

7. That Falwell is given a forum to spew his ignorance is a sign
of sickness in America

Whenever Falwell opens his mouth a persons first reaction should be to point and laugh.

It's not about a right to speak - it's about being too well informed to listen

Falwell is the example of how not to be and should be used as such.

12. Well, let's add up the facts,
Carter, won a nobel prize, helps build homes for those in need, promotes peace throughout the world, yeah that adds up, not. Mr. Falwell needs to get his head out of his *ss. I, for one would like to see him try to accomplish what Jimmy Carter has done. The only thing he has accomplished in his life is being able to con money out of our most vulnerable senior citizens.

Both did the same act.

I'm not talking about the questioning under oath; I'm talking the extramarital affair, which is what Falwell is being forgiving about to one, and not so forgiving to the other.

Dark Side of Rev. Moon: Buying the Right

Dark side of Jerry Falwell: Being bought off!

By Robert Parry

On Jan. 28, 1995, a beaming Rev. Jerry Falwell told his Old Time Gospel Hour congregation news that seemed heaven sent. The televangelist hailed two Virginia businessmen as financial saviors of debt-ridden Liberty University, the fundamentalist Christian school that Falwell had made the crown jewel of his Religious Right empire.

"They had to borrow money, hock their houses, hock everything," enthused Falwell. "Thank God for friends like Dan Reber and Jimmy Thomas." Falwell's congregation rose as one to applaud. The star of the moment was Daniel Reber, who was standing behind Falwell. Thomas was not present.

Reber and Thomas earned Falwell's public gratitude by excusing the Lynchburg, Va., school of about one-half of its $73 million debt. In the late 1980s, that flood of red ink had forced Falwell to abandon his Moral Majority political organization and nearly drowned Liberty University in bankruptcy.

Reber and Thomas came to Falwell's rescue in the nick of time. Their non-profit Christian Heritage Foundation of Forest, Va., snapped up a big chunk of Liberty's debt for $2.5 million, a fraction of its face value. Thousands of small religious investors who had bought church construction bonds through a Texas company were the big losers. But Falwell shed no tears. He told local reporters that the moment was "the greatest single day of financial advantage" in the school's history.

21. Wow - I have always said that the problem with Falwell isn't so much that he really wants..
to impose Christianity on government, as that he wants Christianity to be redefined as right-wing Republicanism, and to have 'the Republican president' renamed 'God'. "Thou shalt have no other gods than the Republican president...Remember the Republican party and keep it holy"; etc.

And now he's basically saying so out of his own mouth!

33. In the election of 08 we
will see just who the sexist and the racist are. If Rudy wins the nomination the religious right will have become the hypocritical religious right. One cannot condemn a democrat that is pro choice and in the same breath support a republican that does.
The downfall of America will not be caused by any secular progressives or liberals but the religious right. Thus far America has awoken each time they become too strong and begin to influence the government, but we have to be always on the lookout for their takeover of this country.
