50. Because he's an ass
Edited on Sun Apr-08-07 12:00 PM by gaspee
I would hope it's because he knows he was part of the pack that tried to take down the Clintons for eight years. And all they succeeded in doing is bringing us Bush. I would hope it's overwhelming guilt making him act like a rabid dog around Hillary, but it's probably more likely sexism and anti-clintonism.

And it bothers me when the male politicians last names are used, but the women are named by their first name. In Hillary's case I do it because there's another Clinton out there with a too common first name to just refer to him as "Bill."

20. I don't know.
I think Gore is sexy.

I've always thought so.

I remember being a young cubbie reporter working for the college newspaper and getting to interview Al when he was our senator. My knees went weak and that rarely, if ever, happened when I was interviewing a subject.

28. Superficiality of political reporting. All they see is image, not substance.
For Matthews and every other MSM "journalist," political races are not about ideas, ideals, or abilities, they are about appearance, campaign strategy, and likability. In their opinion Americans all read People Magazine and couldn't vote for a candidate who wouldn't be cast in a lead role in a romance (even though Gore was part of the model for a romance novel hero before he was famous). Gore's weight is more important than his success record, just as Bush's beer-drinkability was more important than his record of complete failure and drunkeness throughout his life.

Of course, they won't give the same treatment to Giuliani, who is quite physically unappealing, but that's a different issue, involving the MSM being the advertising department of the Republican Party.

I still don't think Gore will get in the race, but I would love, love, love to see it. :)

I reallllly want him to run. it's him or Edwards (in my tons of canvassing and such that I'll do) or no one, because frankly, I don't like Obama or Hillary enough to work hard for them, sorry, it's just the truth. I worked hard for Kerry and Edwards, and Gore and LIEberman, but I don't like Hillary, esp., and so I pray Gore throws his hat in, and wins the nom and selects either Edwards, Clark, or Kucinich.

Edited on Sun Apr-08-07 10:42 AM by mnhtnbb
Doesn't that result in people holding off from donating to the top contenders?

Isn't it possible that the Republicans would like to slow down the Dem donation machine so they'd have a chance to catch up?

Would I like Gore to run? Absolutely. I think he's the most qualified for the job. But I have to believe him when he says, for the gazillionth time, he has no plans to run.

And yes, with the rigors of a book tour coming up, he just might be
dieting for that.

I think Gore would like to be viewed as an elder statesman for the Dem party.

23. A lot of people are holding off anyway.
It's too damn early for most people to be thinking about this and most people aren't. Sure, the folks with money coming out of their ears are thinking about it - but they have enough money to donate to several campaigns.

The average Joe and Jane out there; however, probably won't start thinking about the primaries until Fall.

45. I'll tell you who benefits...
the Draft Gore movement!

We need that money for draft Gore bumper stickers, buttons and other materials. We can put that money to use in many other ways as well.

He has left the option to run open. In January, when several media outlets falsely reported that Gore had ruled out running, Gore put out a statement through his spokesman:

“Absolutely nothing new,” Gore spokesman Michael Feldman said of the report. “He’s been saying the same thing for six years - that he’s not running but has not completely ruled it out - and depending on where he is, it’s reported differently.”

Gore is clearly the best candidate, period. Please get involved. We have the power to draft him. If we build it, he will come.

Sounded a little like a thing when celebrities lose X amount of pounds due to an obligation to a sponsor or product or charity, but in this case, per Tweety, to a friend.

I basically watched it because Rather dropped that line early in the show, like in the first few minutes, so I stuck around to see if he would have additional info. Then at the end during the Tell Me Something I Don't Know segment, he brought it up again, and that's when they discussed the weight thing.

Locally (eastern Iowa), I get it on NBC on Saturday's at 5:00 pm CT so I watched it yesterday.

58. The media is messing with us
A couple of weeks ago MSNBC was showing KO/Countdown three times a night. Last week they went back to the longstanding two a night showings. They're just toying with us.

But, to tell you the truth, I usually don't go out of my way to watch the Chris Matthews Show. I really don't know what the usual schedule for his show is. The Sunday shows I don't miss are HBO's Sunday night line-up and tonight The Sopranos starts at 8 p.m.(my time). ;)

If I catch it at all it is because of my husband. He watches on Sunday morning, so it is on in the background while I'm either making breakfast or reading the paper. I fade in and out depending on who is talking. When it's someone like Norah, I read the paper. When Rather is on, I look up when I hear his voice. This morning, of all mornings, he took one of the dogs for a run in the woods and I was walking the other two. I missed it altogether.

I for one am game. letters to the editor, using the internets in every which way to expose, neutralize the Heathers. We all need to promise that.
Unlike the easy candidates with real secret warts, Gore is one of the few strong, clean ones that MSM REALLY doesn't want in a race - so don't expect them to relent for a second!

65. Look at the paunch on this statesman. . .

Franklin, like Gore, was portly. . .and wise Benjamin said: “To lengthen thy life, lessen thy meals.”

So, yes, Gore should lose weight for his own sake

BUT

Al, please don't worry about having to lose weight in order to be re-elected President

because, like Franklin, you're still quite the statesman we desperately need 2008, WITH OR WITHOUT THE PAUNCH!

It's your mind that turns us on, not the torso.

And for God's sake, run with Wesley Clark so we can roll up our sleeves and get down to repairing all the BushCo damage. . .

GORE/ CLARK 2008. . .

the GUARANTEED WINNING TEAM for 2008-2016 and beyond.

And to think he would lose weight to once again play that game after stating image as part of the toxicity of this system does not follow, so I don't believe it. If he is losing weight it may be for his own health ( what a concept huh?) or to shut up those who can't seem to stop talking about it. I would love it however, if he is doing it just to fake everyone out because it is obvious people in certain circles really don't support his endeavors unless they have tripe like this to speculate about, because if this were a thread about his opening the Tribeca Film Festival or some other thread about his climate change work it would have fallen into oblivion. Speaks volumes to me.

More and more I've been hoping for Gore to run. I read a great interview with him about a year ago (New York Magazine? I was disappointed during his testimony @ Congress - when inhofe did his bs, Al's response to one of the diatribes was painfully reminiscent of some of the less successful parts of the debates -
I forget the detail, but it was a rambling attack-type question with about 5 or 6 cheap shots
Al said "did I hear something about () in there?" and proceeded to expound on that topic, getting cut off by inhofe. He came across as defensive, evasive, over-rehearsed on a particular point, grasping for something to say...

I know it was not the right setting to do it, but I want him to respond to shit like that the way Clinton did to Wallace. Just rip the guy a new one for a crappy so-called question, say "Ask one question and I'll answer it, but when you go off on a rambling, ill-founded diatribe to satisfy your big contributors, I'm not dignifying it with a response." then watch the guy's head explode.

127. Best speech I ever saw. It was also the speech that convinced me
he was the man for the job. He is the leader this country needs right now. If there has ever been a time for this man and this country, it is NOW.

Everything he has done since the MLK Day speech has simply reinforced my belief that he is the best candidate. This is a time for great deeds and great leaders. This Nation is either going to stumble and fail mightily or finally pull itself out of the swamp it is swimming in and stand tall and lead. What happens in the next ten years will have major implications for the world for generations to come.

As quoted in An Inconvenient Truth:

"The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close. In its place we are entering a period of consequences."

101. I wrote somewhere
over a year ago that Gore would hold out, that various dems would announce early, absorb all the crap, and he would come in at the last minute. That it would work because they are in on it - they are willing 'stalking horses'. They'd rally around him quickly, continue taking crap, run the 'rapid response' machine. Right now what they are doing is just burning up rw energy on various red herrings.

The right knows it (or strongly suspects it) and that is why they are so aggressive in slamming Gore for what he IS doing, since they can't attack him as a candidate.

just my speculation - or pipe dream

NONE of their prominent pols seem like "leaders" - the tricky bit for them is to come up with someone who will appeal to the big business megarich and still be able to pull in the redneck base. Essentially another bush. Maybe Jeb IS in their plans - but I think he's too tainted by this bush's debacle.

I usually dislike 'Running Mate' talk for that reason, but broke just this once. All 08D candidates should, and will, give it their all. Their supporters deserve nothing less.

FWIW in no real order I like Edwards, Obama, Richardson, Clark, DK. Hell even Biden sometimes makes sense when he talks about iraqi federation the only solution *if we have to stay, which we should not, but *if.

Obama has completely re-shaped the primary season from what I expected by knocking hrc into the pack so early. I'm pretty bad at predictions.

Gore's 2008 Plans May Become Clearer After Release of Book

By John F. Harris and Shailagh Murray
Sunday, September 17, 2006; Page A07

Although saying he has no plans to run for president in 2008, former vice president Al Gore has nonetheless left the door ever so slightly ajar. It's a good bet that door will swing open a good bit wider come next May.

That is when Gore is scheduled to publish his next book. With no fanfare, he signed a few weeks ago with Penguin Press to write "The Assault on Reason."

As described by editor Scott Moyers, the book is a meditation on how "the public arena has grown more hostile to reason," and how solving problems such as global warming is impeded by a political culture with a pervasive "unwillingness to let facts drive decisions."

While that may sound abstract, both the subject matter and the timing of the release have an unmistakable subtext. In 2004, Gore cheered liberals when he lashed at President Bush for allegedly falling captive to right-wing special interests and taking flight from "fact-based analysis." If the book strikes a chord, it will produce new momentum for Gore to make another bid for the White House, presumably fueled in large part by anti-Iraq-war Democrats...

121. I can confidently say (much to some people's chagrin) that Gore
running in '08 is the ONLY way I will donate any money in the election. After '04, I vowed never to give anymore money. But, hell, a Gore candidacy in '08? I'd not only give money, I'd wear his campaign Tshirt every day!!!

122. I wonder how many people posting have actually given to The Climate Project?
Anyone doing that or going to work to mititgate this crisis that is Mr. Gore's passion and which new reports claim is happening NOW, beyond wanting to use it as a political football and waste millions on BS polls and ads that he rightfully claimed contributed to the toxic political process? Threads like this only prove how right Mr. Gore is about it all and that on the whole people really haven't changed. For all their ranting about it, the media speaks, and people jump.

... the base of the party is african american voters and this week showed they are clearly with Obama. Regardless of the money factor, it's the support Barack had really with 100,000 donations with Hillary and Edwards with 50,000 and 40,000 respectively. At the time of the oscars polls said Gore had the same amount of support as Edwards.

128. WAIT A SECOND!! WAIT A SECOND!!
I joined the YMCA and hope to lose about 40 pounds as well. Maybe I can be Gore's running mate? Both running for the White House and running at the YMCA?

Go Gore Go!
41 pounds to go :-)

129. From Dan Rather
no less an authority! I almost peed in my pants. Anyone who has gone on a diet knows how serious that must be. The Nobel Prize will be announced mid-October and he may make an announcement in September. Hmmm. The plot thickens.

140. Why?
He's already been vetted, there isn't a thing that isn't known about him. And someone should tell Tweety and the gang that the election is in November 2008, not 2007. There are twenty months left before the american people pull the lever and decide the next president. I think Al is in no danger of "squeaking in on time". A great deal of voters don't make their final decisions until the week before they go to the polls. The only urgency these days is for the media who love to entice their audience by playing the "Who Do You Think Will Win Game".

142. I was thinking more of fundraising...
Though I'm sure he'd raise money at a far faster rate than the current front runners. I guess.

141. May we be so lucky.
Maybe he'll pick rather as a running mate, anything is a step up from LIEbermann.
