Gonzales should consider resigning, Gingrich says
Joining a growing list of Republicans, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should consider resigning. The possible presidential candidate said the botched firing of U.S. attorneys has destroyed Gonzales' credibility as the nation's top law enforcer.

"I think the country, in fact, would be much better served to have a new team at the Justice Department, across the board," Gingrich said. "I cannot imagine how he is going to be effective for the rest of this administration. ... They're going to be involved in endless hearings."

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who is helping lead the investigation into the firing of eight federal prosecutors, said Gingrich's comments pointed to building bipartisan support for a new attorney general.

"This is another important voice who believes that the attorney general should step down for the good of the country and the good of the department," Schumer said in a statement. "We hope both the attorney general and the president heed Speaker Gingrich's message."

1. I hesitate to make predictions but I think the Democrat's plan is
to force Gonzales out and then concentrate on Carl Rove. After Rove comes Cheney and by then Bush's term will be over.

I fear who this regime will put in Gonzo's place...

In any case, it's just another brick in the wall.

8. I beg to differ, Newt...
If Newt feels that ... the botched firing of U.S. attorneys has destroyed Gonzales' credibility ... then he has either failed to see the real problem or is misleading his audience.

The firings were just the superficial evidence of a Justice Department run amuck with corruption and incompetence. If you can't be enraged by rampant political molestation of the rule of law, you should at least be outraged by the continued appointment and promotion of incompetence by the Bush Administration.

Chuck, I hope you are just building Newt up because you know he would be so easy to beat in '08.

12. Meet the Press... Basic incompetency
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032608/

MS. WOODRUFF: We are told, Tim, that Alberto Gonzales is working around the clock on that testimony coming up nine days from now. He’s canceled his vacation, he’s working. You talk to Republicans, though, they’re already focused on who his replacement is going to be. (snip)

MR. GREGORY: And it’s so telling that, within the White House, in this White House, despite the fact that the president has come out and said that he still has confidence in his attorney general, inside, privately they say, “We, we don’t know whether he’s going to make it.” which in, in the world of this White House is so significant that there’s not even that kind of backing inside. The question is can he go up and clean up the mess in the eyes of, particularly, Democratic senators. It’s going to be difficult.

(snip)

MR. RUSSERT: Bottom line, Chuck Todd?

MR. TODD: It’s his incompetency. This is what—it, it—it’s sort of a running theme now for the entire Bush second term, competency. Competency. They couldn’t—they couldn’t figure out how to politically fire some U.S. attorneys? I mean, this is political competency. Forget whether it was illegal or unethical. That’s what I think is frustrating Republicans the most about this entire scandal.

MR. RUSSERT: Right, or to have a chief of staff saying, “I’m sorry, the boss didn’t tell it to you straight.”

MR. TODD: Right, I mean, it’s just a basic—it’s just basic competency.

snip)

MR. GREGORY: ...people who don’t want to work for these political appointees. You can’t have that at the Justice Department.

14. My favorite comment was...
something along this line - "The GOP wasn't for big government, and now they ARE and can't seem to run it"
(Forget about Gonzo the Clown)

This is an epiphany to fight the old GOP crap of :dem: wanting big Government & GOP wanting it smaller.

At least the :kick: can run it better when it IS larger!

Edited on Sun Apr-08-07 05:33 PM by Zambero
At least Gingrich was lucid enough to see the handwriting on the wall and step down after the Clinton impeachment spectacle (failed coup) blew up in his and the GOP's collective faces in the '98 midterm elections.

20. I watched this exchange today. I usually do not watch Fox but I was
in the basement and my reception was poor! My overall impression was that Schumer missed the boat by not talking about why these people were dismissed. I think it is important that everyone understands that they reason they were dismissed was part of a larger scheme to try and exert some control over the 2008 election process. Schumer just let Newt get by with the "Clinton did it" BS. When asked for a rebuttal he just said he basically agreed that Gonzales needed to resign. He did mention that the hearings were important but if he did mention the real purpose of the firings I missed it.

I wonder sometimes if they are too afraid to speak about anything without being ABSOLUTELY certain about whatever it is they are saying. No one seems to want to go out on a limb. Afraid of the Media noise machine I would guess.

I kept thinking why does anyone even listen to people like Newt anymore? Why does a serial adulterer get air time as the standard barer of conservatives? If Newt was a Democrat Fox would have buried him. They did bring up one of his gaffs but I think it was just to give him an opportunity to apologize again.

Such silliness.
