Row over (British) Sailors selling their Iran stories
The Ministry of Defence allows Faye Turney and the other Iran captives to sell their stories but are they selling out their service?

They've settled on a price and this morning Sir Trevor MacDonald settled down with Faye Turney to hear her story.

The freed sailor, is reported to have made a six-figure deal with ITV's tonight with Trevor Macdonald and the Sun newspaper in exchange for an exclusive interview.

Some of the other detained servicemen are expected to sell their stories too. The Royal Marines involved have announced they'll be pooling any money they make, and donating ten per cent to charity.

3. That must be another reason most of them were smiling.
On top of being released they knew that they would make more money from their stories than they could ever earn from their Military Service.

4. Let's not think they're too lucky.
From some of the intimidation I hear they went through, they could be suffering from PTSD and other issues - you're not always okay just because you're smiling and sometimes it is good to tell your story. I hope this helps them.

5. PTSD is usually experienced when one views something beyond human

"emotional comprehension." Examples may include seeing bodies / body parts on the battlefield or subsequent to a plane or car crash.

Yes, they had a number of significant emotional events:
1) Stripped and dressed in pajamas;
2) While blindfolded on one occasion they heard guns cocked around them;
3) They were "lied to" and emotionally manipulated.

However, they did not experience the following:

1) Complete isolation? No, they were able to communicate with fellow sailors after a few days;
2) Threats to their life? No, there were no threats to their lives nor anything that can be construed as mock executions.
3) Physical abuse. No, one of the sailors stated that they were *treated humanely.*

I'm not implying that some of these sailors and marines may have some emotional issues that may require counseling, but there was no SPECIFIC *horror* that would rise to the criterion of an event that underlies PTSD.

Yes, they will be looked upon by the Brit Populace as if they are in a fishbowl, but I honestly don't believe that they will develop PTSD, especially since counseling has and will continue to be available for them. :shrug:
