If you drive you smoke
Our local government is trying to outlaw smoking outdoors. While I support limiting smoking in public gathering places I'm more then a little frustrated by all the smoking traffic everyone ignores. So I created a new bumper sticker to address this.

You can download the PDF art free on my web site. And please save me a seat in the non smoking part of the country.

1. If you "drive" you "smoke"? I don't get it.
You're frustrated by all the "smoking traffic"? Are you referring to those who smoke in their own vehicles? I'm a smoker but I've always been considerate of those who don't, long before there were laws governing smokers. I don't need the government infringing my private space, thank you.

And love that jpg (miss her too).

BTW I smoke cigars which is why I created this bumper sticker. Making fun of hypocrisy is one of my greatest joys.

21. i thought you were saying that Cigarettes and eating in cars etc cause ~70% of accidents
actually one article said it was over 80 of driver accidents

i think smoking should be illegal in front of minors, smoking is child abuse, the tobacco companies have to hook children to replace the customers that die from their toxic products.. adults do not frequently start smoking, their money is allocated to necessities, paying rent food and chasing sex

25. Only 2 million worldwide, so car pollution is ok?
According to a WHO assess¬ment of the burden of disease due to air pollution, more than 2 million premature deaths each year can be attributed to the effects of urban outdoor air pollution and indoor air pollution (caused by the burning of solid fuels). More than half of this disease burden is borne by the populations of developing countries.

Traffic pollution 'kills thousands every year'
Traffic pollution is taking its toll on Europeans
September 1, 2000

GENEVA (CNN) -- A new study suggests traffic pollution is killing tens of thousands of people across Europe every year.

Researchers looked at deaths in Austria, France and Switzerland and found that six percent -- more than 40,000 a year -- are caused by air pollution.

I ride the bike and drive very seldom. So I can't complain about "smoking cars?"

10. Then where can people smoke?
I don't smoke so this isn't a personal thing, but if people aren't allowed to smoke in buildings, can't smoke inside their house if they have kids, and can't smoke outdoors, where do they smoke?

17. yeah I know but it made me wonder about that
that there isn't anywhere available to smoke at that point if you're a smoker.

Car exhaust certainly isn't good for us but I don't think it's as hazardous as smoking. And people who are smoking are smoking AND dealing with exhaust.

The hypocrisy of a city or town calling itself "smoke free" and then allowing heaps of traffic is amazing.

13. They can create little sealed outhouses
so that they and only they get to breathe their first hand and second hand smoke.

Sorry, but my mother died when I was eight because she smoked. I'm not much for the poor smoker's rights.

Cars are for getting places. If they're stuck in an outhouse they won't get very far.

I guess it's only for electric cars, and then you have to make sure you've got power exclusively from nuclear, hydro, solar, and/or wind power, or else you're "smoking" too.

We're all supposed to walk or bike to work, I guess.

16. Yeah but you have no right to idle your car in my face either.
I'm SO happy Florida has banned smoking indoors.

Smoking serves no useful purpose other than administering nicotine.

At least driving accomplishes the purpose of going from point A to point B.

non smokers are not going to go anywhere where a lot of people are smoking, we cant go anywhere here in the south, NC..where you cant graduate the 3rd grade without having smoked 2 years.. my wife has serious asthma, it gives me hives, i was an 80's environmental canary..which was cased by a carpet glue, it caused universal allergies to anything with formaldehyde or petroleum products in it.. i was sick for years.. only a few thing cause me to break out in hives now

24. Yeah, last time my child got bit by a poisonous snake and had to go to the ER
I hopped on a packet of Marlboros and smoked her down to the hospital to save her life.

Nice bumper sticker graphics. Too bad that, beyond damaging particulates being put in the air by human behavior, it's mostly false equivalence. Purpose of the behavior does kind of come into play here.

(NOTE: In interest of full disclosure, the above was just a rhetorical example. I don't actually have any kids. But if I did and this happened, I would certainly drive her to the ER and not smoke along the way.)

28. Yeah, my neighbor needs his humongous Hummer H2
He says he needs it in case we have an earthquake and he needs to drive through the rubble.

(NOTE: In full disclosure I don't have a neighbor with a Hummer H2 but I've heard this type of excuse from all kinds of folk driving/smoking for one reason or another. And they may need their vehicle of choice. But, ... they still smoke when they drive.)

29. Air Pollution Linked to Heart Deaths
Jan. 31, 2007 -- Air pollution is a much bigger factor in death from heart disease or stroke than has previously been recognized, according to findings from one of the largest studies ever to examine the issue.

Researchers followed close to 66,000 women -- aged 50-79 -- living in 36 cities. All the women were enrolled in the ongoing health study, the Women's Health Initiative.

After adjusting for other risk factors for heart disease and stroke, they found that air quality was a strong predictor of heart disease and stroke risks -- and an even stronger predictor of death from heart disease or stroke.Fine particulate air pollution -- caused primarily by vehicle exhausts, coal-fired power plants, and other industrial sources -- was the sole type of air pollution associated with increased risk.

It's absolutely insane how we target one thing, and all but miss the forest for the trees on another thing.

But watch it, you're playing with the very core of American existence. The greatest and most harmful addiction of any. I posted how I am frugal with my habits, on another forum. It was a bike forum where someone was asking how far people drive to their bike rides. I don't. Not very often. And a poster replied that I was an asshole for trying to tell other people what to do. A totally defensive posture that was completely unwarranted. A BIKING forum. Even they don't get it.

When the car is gone, it'll be a better world. A cleaner, healthier, better world.

PS- nice bumper sticker, even if a bit ironic. Bumper? Car?
