"If a CONSERVATIVE said what IMUS said, they'd be fired IMMEDIATELY!" Oh REALLY???!!!
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 10:10 AM by in_cog_ni_to
That was a C-SPAN Washington Journal caller from this morning. Let us compare, shall we? And might I add, IMUS is NOT a LIBERAL...dumb ass!

This morning, Don Imus planted his Kiss of Death squarely on John McCain's brow by declaring his undying support for McCain in the 2008 race.

In 2006, Imus gave his undying support to Rick Santorum (R-PA) and Harold Ford (D-TN), two of the biggest losers on election day.

And in 2004, John Kerry was the unfortunate victim of Imus' "love."

If I were John McCain, I'd give some serious thought to dropping out sooner rather than later, since defeat is now guaranteed.

And for the record, Imus' second choice is Rudy Giuliani - which seals his fate too.

They really are selective listeners, aren't they? Now, PAY ATTENTION FREEPERS...this is for the Freepers who can actually READ. Apparently, most are DEAF!

Just a few examples:

Boortz on Cyntia McKinney:

BOORTZ: She looks like a ghetto slut.

OK, Now I've seen Cynthia McKinney's new hairstyle. There is just no other way to say this. It's just hideous. She looks like ghetto trash. Get a braider over there ... quick! Nobody with a modicum of self-respect would go around looking like that.

Rush Limpballs:

■ "I mean, let's face it, we didn't have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I'm not saying we should bring it back; I'm just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark."

■ "You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray . We miss you, James. Godspeed."

Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh equated Chelsea to a dog:

On November 6, 1992, three days after her father won the elections, when Chelsea was still in braces, Rush Limbaugh said the following: "Everyone knows the Clintons have a cat; Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is also a White House dog?" He then pointed to a video monitor, which switched to a picture of Chelsea. Although Limbaugh has claimed that it was a technical error, as Al Franken documented in his book Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, since the show was on a tape delay, if it truly was a technical error, it could have been corrected prior to airing of the show.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelsea_Clinton

In 1998, Salon criticized the mainstream media for not directly quoting an off-color joke made by Sen. John McCain at a Republican fundraiser, in which he ridiculed Chelsea (who was a teenager at the time) along with Hillary Clinton and Janet Reno. <8>
In 2001, as President Clinton was leaving office, The National Review contributing editor John Derbyshire authored a column specifically attacking Chelsea, in which he wrote "I hate Chelsea Clinton", and "Chelsea is a Clinton. She bears the taint." <9>

As Tom Jackson, Steve Young and Irvin discussed McNabb's poor start, Limbaugh dropped an unnecessary bombshell with racial tones.

"Sorry to say this, I don't think he's (McNabb) been that good from the get-go," Limbaugh said in unscripted remarks. "I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well, black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/columnist/martzke/2003-10-01-martzke_x.htm

suggested that the competition in a new season of CBS' reality TV program Survivor, in which contestants are reportedly divided into competing "tribes" by ethnicity, "is not going to be fair if there's a lot of water events." In support of this assertion, he cited a March 2 HealthDay article reporting that "young blacks -- especially males -- are much more likely to drown in pools than whites."

there "are many characteristics ... that you would think would give the lead, and the heads up in terms of skill and athleticism and so forth." He also stated that "our early money" is on "the Hispanic tribe" -- which he said could include "a Cuban," "a Nicaraguan," or "a Mexican or two" -- provided they don't "start fighting for supremacy amongst themselves." Limbaugh added that Hispanics have "probably shown the most survival tactics," that they "have shown a remarkable ability to cross borders" and that they can "do it without water for a long time, they don't get apprehended, and they will do things other people won't do."

also asserted that "the Asian-American tribe" -- whom he called "the brainiacs of the bunch" -- "probably will outsmart everybody," but while "intelligence is one thing ... raw, native understanding of the land -- this is probably why the Native Americans were excluded, because they were at one with the land and they would probably have an unfair advantage."

As a young broadcaster in the 1970s, Limbaugh once told a black caller:“Take that bone out of your nose and call me back.” A decade ago, after becoming nationally syndicated, he mused on the air: “Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?”

In 1992, on his now-defunct TV show, Limbaugh expressed his ire when Spike Lee urged that black schoolchildren get off from school to see his film Malcolm X: “Spike, if you’re going to do that, let’s complete the education experience. You should tell them that they should loot the theater, and then blow it up on their way out.”

In a similar vein, here is Limbaugh’s mocking take on the NAACP, a group with a ninety-year commitment to nonviolence:“The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies.”

Michael Weiner Savage:

called a self-identified gay caller a "sodomite" and told him, "You should only get AIDS and die, you pig." He went on to call the man a "piece of garbage" and told him to "go eat a sausage and choke on it."

"urn a Mexican flag for America, burn a Mexican flag for those who died that you should have a nationality and a sovereignty, go out in the street and show you're a man, burn 10 Mexican flags, if I could recommend it. Put one in the window upside down and tell them to go back where they came from!"

On the March 22 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Michael Savage asked his listeners to "put your mind into the mind-set of the enemy. ... I want you to put yourself into the mind-set of the Bedouin, who hates us." He then asked: "What would you think of a country that spends most of its time arguing over whether a man can marry a man and do to each other what is despised by 99.9 percent of humanity from the beginning of time until now." Savage added: "Because make no mistake about it: 99.9 percent of humanity despises that behavior because they do not want to go down that road, and they know it's the road of death." Savage also said: "he lion of the desert says, 'I'd rather die, I'd rather blow myself up than ever see my son Ahmed marrying the other guy's son, Mahmoud, and doing these despicable acts to each other.' " Savage further stated: "And then he sees loud-mouthed, foul-tempered women in high places bossing men around; foul-mouthed, foul-tempered women in high places bossing men around," in reference to Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA).

Michael Savage attacked Sen. Bernard Sanders (I-VT), saying, "Kiss my behind, you psycho," and "Screw you, you jealous loser." Savage also called Sanders "a rat," "a bum," and "a dirty socialist" and told him to "go to hell."These remarks followed audio clips Savage played on his show, in which Sanders addressed the issues of wealth distribution and childhood poverty. Savage asked: "Now, how did child poverty become an issue all of a sudden? ... Two weeks ago we heard that -- before the elections, three months ago -- that children were overweight and fat from eating too much McDonald's; they were dying of diabetes from being little piglets. Now, we hear about childhood poverty, childhood poverty."

During his program, Savage also said that, "assuming the world is still here" after a Clinton-Obama administration, Obama would then run for president with "Saddam Hussein's younger grandson" as his running mate.

On the January 29 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Michael Savage stated that, rather than "tak our side should there be some kind of catastrophic attack on America," Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) would "march thousands of us into the hands of the enemy." He also said that Obama and Clinton -- whom he identified as "Hussein Barack Obama" and "Hillary Rotten Clinton" -- "would gladly take the guns of the American military and turn them first on the American patriot, rather than turning the guns of the American patriot on the enemy within."

Michael Weiner Savage:

- The United States "is being taken over by the freaks, the cripples, the perverts and the mental defectives"

- Gays and lesbians are "perverts" and that "the gay and lesbian mafia wants our children"

- America is a "'she-ocracy' where a minority of feminist zealots rule the culture...together, they have both feminized and homosexualized much of America to point where the nation has become passive, receptive and masochistic"

- MSNBC's Ashleigh Banfield is "the mind-slut with a big pair of glasses"

- When speaking of immigrants, "You open the door to them, and the next thing you know, they are defecating on your country and breeding out of control." (http://www.glaad.org/action/campaigns_detail.php?id=3295)

John McCain:

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because her father is Janet Reno."

http://www.salon.com/news/1998/06/25newsb.html

Bill Bennett:

Addressing a caller's suggestion that the "lost revenue from the people who have been aborted in the last 30 years" would be enough to preserve Social Security's solvency, radio host and former Reagan administration Secretary of Education Bill Bennett dismissed such "far-reaching, extensive extrapolations" by declaring that if "you wanted to reduce crime ... if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down." Bennett conceded that aborting all African-American babies "would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do," then added again, "but the crime rate would go down

Tramm Hudson, a Republican candidate for a Florida congressional seat who stated that "blacks are not the greatest swimmers or may not even know how to swim."

Bill O'LIElly:

Summary: On his radio show, Bill O'Reilly wondered whether children of legal and illegal immigrants from Mexico who are attending school in the United States "have any kind of traditional value system at all, vis-à-vis what America used to be," or whether they are "taking their Mexican values, because most of them are Mexicans, and, you know, basically setting up Acapulco North."

On the March 9 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, host Bill O'Reilly responded to an email from a viewer complaining about his statement the previous day that the victims of a March 7 fire in the Bronx in which one adult and eight children were killed "may be illegal aliens" by stating: "Your so-called compassion helped kill those kids." He later added: "It's people like you, , who promote that kind of chaos in the name of compassion, who look the other way while poor workers and children are exploited by greedy landlords and businesses because you don't like the immigration laws."

Bill O'Reilly's Final Solution
June 23, 2004
By Thomas Wheeler

There he goes again. Here's what Bill O'Reilly had to say on his June 17 broadcast of The Radio Factor:

O'REILLY: Because look... when 2 percent of the population feels that you're doing them a favor, just forget it, you're not going to win. You're not going to win. And I don't have any respect by and large for the Iraqi people at all. I have no respect for them. I think that they're a prehistoric group that is - yeah, there's excuses.

Sure, they're terrorized, they've never known freedom, all of that. There's excuses. I understand. But I don't have to respect them because you know when you have Americans dying trying to you know institute some kind of democracy there, and 2 percent of the people appreciate it, you know, it's time to - time to wise up.

And this teaches us a big lesson, that we cannot intervene in the Muslim world ever again. What we can do is bomb the living daylights out of them, just like we did in the Balkans. Just as we did in the Balkans. Bomb the living daylights out of them. But no more ground troops, no more hearts and minds, ain't going to work.

Glenn Beck:

referred to survivors of Hurricane Katrina who remained in New Orleans as "scumbags." Also, after acknowledging that nobody "in their right mind is going to say this out loud," Beck attacked victims of the disaster in general and the families of victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, saying: "I didn't think I could hate victims faster than the 9-11 victims

To help boost interest in the special, Beck, on the eve of the Exposed showing, manufactured a controversy by inviting Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim elected to Congress, to be on the program. Beck then sandbagged Ellison by asking him, after noting that Ellison is a Muslim, a war opponent, and a Democrat, to prove that he was not "working with our enemies."

Beck asked the first Muslim-American member of the US Congress to prove he wasn't working with terrorists simply because he's a Muslim-American.

Beck said the word "faggot" on his show, and tried to diminish this anti-gay slur by calling it simply a "naughty name."

Beck called Barack Obama "colorless", "very white" and that "he might as well be white".

Beck fantasized, on the air, about assassinating filmmaker Michael Moore.

Beck said he "hates" the families of the victims of September 11: "I didn't think I could hate victims faster than the 9-11 victims.... when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh shut up!' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining."

Beck called the residents of New Orleans who stayed behind during Hurricane Katrina "scumbags." He also said the following about the Katrina victims forced to relocate to the Houston Astrodome: "hen I saw these people and they had to shut down the Astrodome and lock it down, I thought: I didn't think I could hate victims faster than the 9-11 victims."

Beck compared US Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) to Adolf Hitler, suggesting that her health care proposal is akin to Hitler's plan to euthanize babies and the elderly.

Ann Coulter:

Defending James Guckert...

"Press passes can't be that hard to come by if the White House allows that old Arab Helen Thomas to sit within yards of the president."

-Ann Coulter, February 23, 2005

On Bill Clinton:

"Well, he was a very good rapist. I think that should not be forgotten

On the Iraq war:

I'm getting a little fed up with hearing about, oh, civilian casualties. I think we ought to nuke North Korea right now just to give the rest of the world a warning."

America should "invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."

In an interview with The New York Observer, Coulter stated that "y only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building."

USA Today also removed Coulter as a columnist covering the 2004 Democratic National Convention after she referred to the gathering as the "Spawn of Satan convention."

On Democrats and progressives

"I think a baseball bat is the most effective way these days." <10/6/04>

"I'm not blaming the Democrats for 9-11 alone. I'm blaming them also for the Cole bombing, for the embassy bombings, for 20 years of attacks that have not been stopped. " <8/16/04>

"What the Democrats want to do is sell blacks out." <10/25/04>

"he platform is violating the Ten Commandments one by one." <2/28/05>

"Al Gore is nuts" <6/14/04> and represents the "insane wing of the Democratic Party." <6/4/04>

"When contemplating college liberals, you really regret once again that John Walker is not getting the death penalty. We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed too. Otherwise they will turn out to be outright traitors." <2/2/02>

On President Clinton

" raped a woman and molested interns in the White House." <5/20/04>

"e was a pathological liar, a sociopath, and felon." <5/23/04>

"In this recurring nightmare of a presidency, we have a national debate about whether he 'did it,' even though all sentient people know he did. Otherwise there would be debates only about whether to impeach or assassinate."

On other topics

"The only way a Supreme Court nominee could win the approval of NARAL and Planned Parenthood would be to actually perform an abortion during his confirmation hearing, live, on camera, and preferably a partial-birth one." <7/21/05>

"We're not that bright." <9/23/04>

"I think the rest of the countries in the Middle East, after Afghanistan and Iraq, they're pretty much George Bush's bitch." <1/10/05>

"Isn't it great to see Muslims celebrating something other than the slaughter of Americans?" <2/3/05>

Canadians "better hope the United States doesn't roll over one night and crush them. They are lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent." <11/30/04>

5. The word I believe we're looking for here is patsy, and that's how Imus is getting played.
I've never known anyone to actually listen to Imus, I didn't even know that much about him aside from being Howard Stern's foil back in the 80s---by the way, how the hell has Stern not received this kind of ire before?---until this whole brouhaha, and while I agree that he said ridiculous things in regard to the Rutgers team, is this really the deserved target of ire, or are we afraid of confronting the worst offenders of this sort?

This type of crap is becoming all too common on right wing talk radio. There is no standard for what's acceptable. At some point you have to set a precedent. They all should have been gone long ago. Fire Imus today and fire Limbaugh and the others the next time they open their pie holes and spew their racist crap. You have to start somewhere and sometime and this is as good as any.

Race. From the tourist’s-eye view, New Orleans is a black city. The servicepeople at the airport, the hotel, concessions, stores, museums, and fast-food outlets are uniformly black. Most of the people you pass on the street, outside the tourist precincts, are black. I think this is the blackest American city I have been in.

<snip>Still, I’d have to say that I found New Orleans an unattractive place. There is something lifeless about it, and that something is not altogether Katrina’s fault.<snip>

Let me just say..I have been to NOLA and the ONE THING you could NEVER call that city is "LIFELESS"...the city that never sleeps? We could walk down to Boubon street at 10:00-11:00 A.M. and the place was buzzing with people. NO is one of the most fascinating cities I've ever visited! WTF is that asshole talking about? Being a 'Conservative', he probably didn't hit Bourbon Street.:eyes: What an asshole.

about shopping at the Waterfront Mall for his daughter's B-day:

<snip>
Normally I wouldn’t have indulged this, but heck, it was her birthday. It did make me feel slightly sad, though, that a bright and lively young person, taken to a city with three centuries of history stacked up, should seek out a shopping mall, of the kind that is exactly the same, with the same vendors — Brookstone, Banana Republic — as in every other mall everywhere in the USA. This one didn’t even have a bookstore I could hang out in. Come to think of it, I didn’t see a bookstore the whole two days poking around New Orleans.<snip>

19. How do these cockroaches sleep at night?
They are absolutely vile, black-hearted, hate-filled individuals that make their large sums of money by feeding the most infantile and antisocial prejudices of their under-educated and xenophobic audiences.

These are supposedly spokespeople for "everyday conservatives", and Arbitron says they have a lot of listeners who apparently support and share their views. The comments of their callers seem to confirm that.

Granted, the excerpts above are cherry-picked, but after many years of sampling conservative talkers in small, as-tolerable doses, my sense is that these are merely more blatant eruptions of the prevailing undercurrents that dominate the message of these commentators:

Hatred of poor and otherwise disadvantaged people
Hatred of racial and sexual minorities and people with non-Christian religious backgrounds
Hatred of people from foreign countries
Hatred of people who care about animals and who want to conserve (oh, the irony) our environment
Hatred of artists and intellectuals
Wild-eyed jingoism, nationalism, and glorification of military violence
Support for the ultra-wealthy elite and scorn for those of lesser means who support the success of the elite with their hard work

I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

These people are terrified at the concept of political "progress", which to them means:

It's less acceptable to call poor people and minorities "lazy" and "morally inferior"
It's less acceptable to call women of color "ghetto sluts" and "nappy headed hos"
It's less acceptable to gratuitously foul and rape the environment and abuse and exploit animals for personal financial gain
It's less acceptable to express base hatred for minorities and foreigners without facing a righteous backlash
It's less acceptable to bemoan the loss of power and prestige of those formerly in a position to use those things to oppress others for the purposes of their own personal financial and social improvement
It's less acceptable to label those that don't agree with you politically as "traitors" and "anti-American"
It's less acceptable to call artists and intellectuals "faggots" or other more repellent slurs

Frankly, looking at these "values" espoused by these well-compensated and well-patronized commentators, these people might as well be from Mars, much less people from my own country. I have absolutely nothing in common with these people, and frankly do not believe that reconciliation with them is possible. I don't believe that they would welcome it, and I certainly wouldn't. Their position is clearly staked out, and I cannot compromise on any of them without feeling a strong need to take a long hot shower, which in the end would not wash away the stain of hate and injustice.

These people are fossils. They wore sheets and carried torches during Jim Crow. They cheered on Joe McCarthy. They manned the fire hoses and loosed the dogs during civil rights. They quietly cheered the assasination of JFK and RFK. They railed against the "injustice" of Nixon's disgrace. They sent boatloads of money to swindling TV evangelists. They screamed for the middle east to be turned into a "glass parking lot" after 9/11. They heartily swallowed the lies about Iraq's alleged WMD, and had no problem with the concept of imperialism there for the purposes of taking control of fossil fuels and subjecting Iraqis to daily double-digit death tolls so they could continue to fill their hummers on cheap gas.

These people are not "Americans" that I want anything to do with. They are throwbacks; they want to preserve what is shameful and bad about American history and avoid progress toward a more enlightened future. They cling to antiquated beliefs and values that time and societal progress have shown to be obsolete.

"WWJD"? He sure wouldn't be a modern American republican, that's for sure.

Maybe Oxycontin is a good sleeping pill...

Just kidding! But I always liked this gem:
>America should "invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."

Because a Christian nation is clearly peaceful, patient, forgiving.... just like Ann. <sigh> :eyes:

30. If we were to really make the fuss that we should when these things are said it could
cause a big change. I have a feeling that Imus is going to be kinder and gentler at least for the near future.

Did anyone hear Tucker Carlson say something about allowing the mentally ill and homeless people to vote is not OK? I meant to mention this last Friday or so when I heard it.

34. The fact that Imus is not a member of the right wing noise machine made him vulnerable.
Because Imus is not a card carrying member of the right wing noise machine, it took a while for the usual suspects to get behind him.

The usual drumbeat of "You're just going after him because he's a conservative" didn't apply to a guy who regularly calls Dick Cheney a war criminal. Imus, for better or worse is a conservative leaning independent. Had this been Rush Limbaugh, this would have immediately been turned into a partisan slugfest between "free speech conservatives" vs "politically correct" liberals.

It took the anvil chorus a while to get into action and even now there's some dissent as some conservatives don't seem to eager to get into the fray for someone who's not one of their own.

38. Well stated, bklyncowgirl
You hit the nail on the head. While Imus does lean to the right, he's not purely neocon nor can he be called liberal. He seems to be the leader of the "Church of Himself."

That doesn't mean I like his show....I don't like it! The few times I was exposed to him, I cringed and changed the station. The guy isn't funny and he strikes me as an insufferable bore. This isn't the first time he's made OBNOXIOUS racial or gender-based comments with zero entertainment value.

You know that saying, "Don't assume I share your prejudices" ?? I have wanted to tell this to Don Imus when I've heard his little snide remarks. The apologists want to say that Chris Rock can say things that Don Imus can't....but Chris Rock is intelligent and fun. Imus is a drip. I think Imus had it coming, since his show attracts so many political figures and he's made promises in the past to cut the crap. There's a prejudicial undercurrent to his "comedy."

36. It is because of WHO he did this to
I agree that Limpballs, etc. get a pass on a lot of what they say, that the Chelsea stuff was horrible, etc. (BTW I think the mainstream media didn't want to report that because it would be spreading it!).

Imus crossed the line because this basketball team has zero to do with politics, and because achievement like this is honored in our country. It totally came out of left field. I believe that this got so much publicity because it was a sports team. Look back at the history of racist remarks in sports getting attention, and how PERSONAL this was, and you can see why it made news.

The sports reporters are probably the ones that were first beating the drums over this. They just have no "standing" on other racial insults.
