Commander killed in Iraq
http://www.navytimes.com/news/2007/04/ap_commander_death_070410/

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A Navy commander who volunteered for a six-month tour of duty in Iraq was killed less than a month before he was scheduled to return home to Pennsylvania, Navy officials said Tuesday.

Cmdr. Philip A. Murphy-Sweet, 42, of Mechanicsburg, was riding in a vehicle that struck a roadside bomb Saturday in Baghdad, officials said. It was not clear whether there were other casualties, Navy officials said.

Murphy-Sweet spent 16 years in the Navy and had been stationed at the Naval Inventory Control Point in Mechanicsburg since December 2004. He was the installation’s first officer to be killed in Iraq, said his commanding officer, Rear Adm. Michael S. Roesner.

Murphy-Sweet went to Iraq in November and was serving as a contracting officer supporting coalition troops, Roesner said.

2. Every time I read these death stories I get madder and madder.
This Commander did not die for my freedom nor did he die keeping me safe. He died because of Bush and Cheney's greed and that of everyone in the world making money from keeping our troops in Iraq. I don't give a damn about what will happen if we leave. We need to pay for what we broke and we need help from other countries to do it but bring our troops home now!

16. He was in a truck, it didn't say driving one
My guess would be he was traveling between bases in more of an administrative capacity.

18. I've been hearing for some time that they've been using Navy
and Air Force personnel to augment the ground troops. :grr:

I wonder how many Americans realize this? Maybe this tragic incident will "let the cat out of the bag".

19. It says he was from an Inventory Control command, probably a Supply Corps officer.
Probably needs to travel to check out the inventory and supply issues at the various bases.

Anyone travelling in vehicles (or not) out there is at risk.

7. My friends son is shipping out in May and when he signed up he wanted to learn
tank repair and the like, when he left for his training a week his mother told me they have him driving Hummers. I'm really nervous for him and her Mom, my friend is beside herself.

13. He Volunteered For Service
He knew he was serving his Evil Master from the day he set foot in Iraq. And at 42, he was wise enough to discern the lunacy of the Operation.

My sympathies to his family, and my harshest scorn on our feeble CiC.

20. Commander would be equivalent to Lieutenant Colonel (O-5).
Captain (Navy) would be the equivalent of a full Colonel (O-6), the highest officer ranks before you get to the "flag" (Admiral/General) ranks.
