Yes, indeedy, I'm a car salesman (go right ahead-take your swings) experiencing Cash for Clunkers, in person. President Obama. Keep feeding $$$ into this program because it's succeeding beyond anyone's wildest beliefs. It is stimulating the economy, (you probably won't see the results for a little bit) and genuinely exciting people. My republican-owned dealership is going out of their way to promote it. They will NEVER give the credit to the current administration, however. Beside the point. A complete and utter success. My only complaint. We are destroying completely driveable vehicles. Can't we donate them to the Wheels for Work program? You provide the insurance-this vehicle is free! I know. The Carbon footprint. It's sad to see. People could use these. Oh well. Genius, Mr. President! Well done!

1. The dealers are jammed.
They are whining about all the gummint paperwork they have to fill out - sure sign that the program is actually working.

Does this mean there is some place I can turn over John Boehner and Mitch McConnell and get money for having done so?

3. We are destroying drivable vehicles and encouraging people to take on debt during the
worst economic downturn in what 70 years. The program is irresponsible and wasteful.

5. Isn't the point to get out of this economic downturn, RB?
You can trade in an absolute piece of shit and buy a economical car with a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty for less than 10,000 dollars. Really fucking irresponsible.

12. I have a 91 Caprice in my driveway

Owned it since 94. Insured and registered the entire time. It qualifies. 138,000 miles. It is ready to be put out to pasture. IF the program is in fact infused with more cash, we may actually retire our polluting worn out iron. We only kept it in case one of our cars goes in the shop etc.

The program only benefits those with cars worth less than $3,500. Simple.

13. You are correct
I have a 2000 Explorer I bought in late 1999 that I ordered just the way I wanted it. It has almost 90,000 miles. Never had any major mechanical problems or been in any accidents. It has been well kept up. It is easily the best vehicle I have ever owned. It qualifies for the program. But the Blue Book price is about the same as the $4500 cash from the government so I am keeping my clunker for a while. A long while I hope. Like to get about another 5 years out of it if possible.

Seen some that were worth a lot. Seen some that weren't worth hauling away.

Everything is relative.

Gas hogs. Relative is an 06 Durango with whatever miles qualifies for Cash for Clunkers. An absolute piece of crap.

16. I have to agree.
People are turning in cars which are most likely paid off by now in order to take on more debt. This will provide a temporary stimulus, at best. It is pulling demand for cars forward by a few months to years. This means that car sales will slow down more than expected at some point in the future.

When people go into debt for a new car, that means they will have less money to spend at the mall or dining out. New car prices may be temporarily propped up by this giveaway, but I expect that they will start to decline once it ends.

I do think, however, the program is too small to have the kind of severe negative impact that Germany's program had. Unfortunately, our program is much less green than the German program, though.

23. I seen a report that the avg. car age on the road now is at an all time high.
These are older cars being turned in. This is pent up demand being met. It will not affect future sales like you are suggesting. These people were jumping at the chance to get a whole heck of a lot more for their clunker than they could've gotten otherwise. My job may be in jeopardy, or I may have been looking to upgrade on one of my two '99's.

"Syracuse-area car dealers say "Cash for Clunkers'' program is a clunker"

11. This same paper keeps complaining because the stimulus
isn't entirely earmarked for road construction. I mean, extend unemployment, make sure states and cities have the money to keep teachers and police officers working, what's up with that?

31. I had to laugh, because I went to the paper's website just to see what was being said
Edited on Sat Aug-01-09 11:01 PM by Berry Cool
and the first thing I saw on it was one of those HUGE annoying banner ads from a Syracuse car dealership, advertising "Trade in your old clunker!"

Boy, this program is working so badly, the newspaper that says it works badly is selling banner ads to car dealerships wildly advertising it. Perhaps they want to give that ad revenue back...?

(In short: Never forget, there's a reason the local paper there is referred to as the "Syracuse Sub-Standard.")

9. We stopped at a Chrysler dealer the other night and they were thrilled
The salesman said he didn't know if they'd have any qualifying vehicles left on the lot soon. We also stopped at the local Ford dealership, too. They were happy with the program, also.

From what I learned first hand it's been successful here.

17. One thing I wonder...
What is done with the cars that are scrapped? If they are 95% recycled, then that's fine, but speaking as a car lover, I still can't feel comfortable with lots of driveable vehicles going to the crusher.

I'm sure some on here would criticize me for my car (20-year-old GM full size, with a carbureted V8), but I've always believed in getting the most use out of things as possible, including running cars for 250,000 miles.

If these scrapped cars are being melted down into raw materials for new cars, then fine, but if not...just doesn't sit well with me.

The program IS a success however. I'm glad to hear sales are way up and hope we start to see ripple effects soon.

when I bought my car and was in the office with the salesman, he got a phone call, politely excused himself, answered and responded to several questions regarding a car....but he seemed to be getting more and more agitated with each question....finally he shouted, "DAD, YOU'RE GONNA BUY THE CAR FROM ME SO STOP CALLING FOR THESE RIDICULOUS DETAILS!"
