Heavy fighting kills 4 Iraqis in Baghdad and wounds 16 GIs
http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/04/10/news/iraq.php

BAGHDAD: U.S. and Iraqi soldiers fought a daylong battle with insurgents in central Baghdad on Tuesday, leaving 4 Iraqi soldiers dead and 16 U.S. soldiers wounded, the military said. It was the heaviest battle in the capital since a major security crackdown was started in February.

Northeast of Baghdad, a woman suicide bomber killed 17 recruits outside a police station in the town of Muqdadiya, police officials said.

In the predominantly Sunni Fadhil neighborhood of central Baghdad, the U.S. and Iraqi forces came under fire by insurgents early Tuesday. A U.S. helicopter was hit by ground fire after it strafed the insurgents, but it returned safely to its base, the military said in a statement. Two Iraqi soldiers and a child were also wounded.

The military statement said U.S. and Iraqi forces were continuing to "locate, identify, and engage and kill three insurgents targeting coalition and Iraqi security forces in the area."

Two witnesses in Baghdad said they saw U.S. helicopters fire on buildings where gunmen had holed up in the Sunni stronghold of Fadhil.

2. Sen. McCain and other republicons were quick to point out that they are perfectly safe

In particular, they said, Commander AWOL is safe at home playing golf and having a grand time.

Remember, the republicons said, the "Mission Accomplished" sign was raised 4 years ago. So everything is peachy, and war profits are way up for republicon cronies."

"The oil war is just ducky," said VP Dick "Five Military Deferments" Cheney, a republicon war hero.

"Please take note of today's republicon talking point, Deferment Leader Cheney said:
"Too bad about your sons and daughters in uniform. We really care, etc. etc. etc."

4. This is one of the most dangerous places
for US troops to be: in dark, dangerous alleyways with hidden traps.
Baghdad is probably the worst.
As U.S. troops kick in doors to suspicious homes, there are people waiting for them down the street.

Bombed-out buildings with numerous hiding places.
It's a tough one to win, and the casualties always go up when they do these "surges".
Sympathy for the troops in this no-win situation.

7. I heard a repug caller on c-span this morning say...
that they are fighting the war correctly. He said that when the people of Iraq were marching yesterday he would have bombed them all. Is that the way the repugs are saving Iraqis?
