WND's purported "Kenyan certification of birth" for President Obama doesn't hold up to scrutiny
(NO surprise here - the birthers are bat-shit lunatics but - here it is for a larf)

Sorry, WorldNetDaily: Kenya wasn't a republic until Dec. 1964

August 03, 2009 12:47 am ET by Jeremy Schulman

WorldNetDaily and the right-wing fringe are very excited about their scoop that Orly Taitz has "released a copy of what purports to be a Kenyan certification of birth" for President Obama. According to WND, "Taitz told WND that the document came from an anonymous source who doesn't want his name known because 'he's afraid for his life.' " So in order to believe Taitz and WND, one would have to assume that this document was requested 45 years ago, preserved that entire time, withheld through the entire election and transition period, and yet somehow ended up in the hands of someone sympathetic to Orly Taitz.

DailyKos' David Waldman has identified what appears to be an even more glaring problem with WND's latest smoking gun. The document posted by WND purports to have been produced by the "Republic of Kenya" on February 17, 1964. But Kenya didn't even become a republic until December 12, 1964. An article from that day's Washington Post, for example, reported that "Kenya became the newest republic within the British Commonwealth at midnight."

14. dangerous to engage the birthers in this
>This bullshit "birth certificate" is not even worth the paper it was printed on.
Someone who's not up on the issue may do a search and find that comment. If they look at the context they'll know which BC, but if all they've heard about is the real HI BC and they see this what will they think. Many people don't dig deep and just read a few search summaries.

I agree with the Whitewater and Kerry arguments for responding, and don't have a better solution.

2. They've already got an answer for this.
They think that Kenya was so excited to be independent that they couldn't wait to start referring to themselves as the "Republic of Kenya" and started doing so before they became an official republic.

They have no evidence, of course.
They don't have one pinch of documented historical evidence that they started using this title of Republic of Kenya prematurely.
They just kinda, sorta have the feeling that this is how it must have gone down.

4. Hee hee.
I think this is hilarious. They'll swallow anything. I wonder if being gullible is a pre-requisite for Repub membership.

7. Oh, and the reason that the certificate was requested two years after Obama was born is that his
parents needed it for their divorce.
I guess they didn't bother to get the BC earlier because they knew they could bring a newborn baby from Africa to the United States without any documentation.

13. I love that the explanation requires further racism
As if those funny little people in Africa simply decided to start labeling their documents 'Republic' despite the fact that no republic had been declared. They don't actually know anything about bureaucracy and Western-styled document management, you know? They just wing it, those silly Africans!

Their excuse is as offensively stupid as their motivation for it.

18. Um, that's nice. But it's two different things. Kenya became independent about a year before
it became the Republic of Kenya

8. What evidence do they posses?
So the birthers do not believe the President, the state of Hawaii, the family of Obama, the newspaper announcement and yet...they DO believe an anonymous source and a paper with significant errors?

11. I thought it was well established that Obama's birth WAS recorded in Kenya
As is the procedure when a child is born abroad to a Kenyan national.

12. don't forget the No# 47O44
Barack Obama was 47 years old when he became the 44th president. And the letter "O" was used instead of a "0". Letter "O" is much wider than a "0" and it matches several of the letter "O" in the document.
