7. It's a catch 22

The politicians need to have publicity for these events because they want to look good to their voters. The purpose of these meetings is at least as much about campaigning for the next election as it is about informing the American people. If they suppress the times and dates of the town halls they might as well not have them, because that will make them look worse than not doing it at all. The best they can do is be ready for aggressive questioning, try to keep their cool, and have their own supporters to "hit back twice as hard" as the President suggested.
