Holt wants answers from FBI on anthrax

He and postal workers seek probe update

PRINCETON — Nearly six years after letters laced with anthrax spooked a nation freshly worried about terrorist attacks, a federal lawmaker and postal workers gathered Tuesday to call for the FBI to explain the progress of its investigation and why the case has never been solved.

Standing down the street from the drop-box where the first anthrax-tainted letter was mailed, Rep. Rush D. Holt, D-N.J., continued to ask the FBI to brief Congress on the status of the investigation of the origin of the 2001 letters that killed five people and left sick many who came into contact with the bacterium.

Holt, flanked by representatives from postal administration and handlers, said the issue needs to remain upfront and that Congress needs to learn lessons from the probe — specifically whether lawmakers need to readdress how to help combat bioterrorism.

"Central New Jerseyans don't need to be reminded that these deadly attacks originated here — that lives were disrupted, that commerce was disrupted, that people died," Holt said. "And for all we know, the murderer is still at large."

1. Interesting how the anthrax attacks vanished off the media's radar........
and the government swept the whole thing 'under the carpet'. Glad to see Rep. Rush Holt bring the story back to the forefront.

2. About freakin' time

The anthrax poisonings were assassination attempts against high-ranking officials, not to mention actual murders of government employees. I dare the media to refer to the poisonings as the assassination attempts that they were.

time as the 'Patriot Act' was coming out.............smells of a Government/CIA inside job.

5. After reading the Salon Greenwald article:

I found this:

Anthrax Missing From Army Lab
January 20, 2002
By JACK DOLAN And DAVE ALTIMARI, Courant Staff Writers

The 1992 inquiry also found evidence that someone was secretly entering a lab late at night to conduct unauthorized research, apparently involving anthrax. A numerical counter on a piece of lab equipment had been rolled back to hide work done by the mystery researcher, who left the misspelled label "antrax" in the machine's electronic memory, according to the documents obtained by The Courant.

Documents from the inquiry show that one unauthorized person who was observed entering the lab building at night was Langford's predecessor, Lt. Col. Philip Zack, who at the time no longer worked at Fort Detrick. A surveillance camera recorded Zack being let in at 8:40 p.m. on Jan. 23, 1992, apparently by Dr. Marian Rippy, a lab pathologist and close friend of Zack's, according to a report filed by a security guard.

"After he left, he had no access to the building. Other people let him in," she said. "He knew a lot of people there and he was still part of the military. I can tell you, there was no suspicious stuff going on there with specimens."

Zack left Fort Detrick in December 1991, after a controversy over allegations of unprofessional behavior by Zack, Rippy, Brown and others who worked in the pathology division. They had formed a clique that was accused of harassing the Egyptian-born Assaad, who later sued the Army, claiming discrimination.

Anyone know anything about this? Has it been looked into? It seems like a long time between the attacks, but of course if it wasn't checked out it is suspicious.

8. I'm glad he wants answers. I hope he gets them.
I won't hold my breath though. The timing and targets of the attacks lead me to believe the truth will never get out.

Congress demands answers on anthrax investigation

WASHINGTON (AP) — Members of Congress want answers on an anthrax investigation, including a fatal attack in South Florida.

Thirty-three members of Congress have written Attorney General Alberto Gonzales demanding that the FBI update lawmakers on the investigation into the anthrax attacks five years ago. The case remains unsolved.

The FBI has refused to tell lawmakers what it has learned, citing concerns about possible leaks.

Senator Patrick Leahy, the panel's top Democrat and its next chairman, was one of the targets of the attacks in fall of 2001. He got an anthrax-filled letter sent to his office.

Interview with Professor Francis Boyle

Agent Bowman was the same FBI agent who sabotaged the FISA warrant for access to Zacarious Moussaoui's computer, which contained information that could have facilitated the prevention of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Later on Bowman was promoted and given a decoration, presumably because he did such a fine job on Moussaoui's computer and also on the anthrax.
